Default Tire and Wheel question

Ok. Probably a stupid question.
I see a lot of cars and pics of cars with 17" wheels and low profile tires. Now the tires look much wider than the stock ones. A wider tire gives you more traction, but also more drag and lower fuel economy. So why go to a wider tire?
It seems like you would be slower and kill your gas milage.

Second question
I want my car to look as stock as possible so I have decided to keep the factory rims (if I do change them it will be last).
I have found the factory tires SUCK, horrible control. What is a good tire, that is not going to break me.
Thinking about making a sleeper. Am working on a dash design so I can put gages in, but not have them visible. ( Years of stereo installs, is finally coming in handy).
anyway, thanks again

The Newbie (but reading and learning more everyday)
BTW any one in North Alabama? Just curious

It really doesnt slow you down all that much or lower you gas milage to much. I doubt you could even notice a difference! A lot of people do it for better traction and handling, some do it just for the looks.

Dunlop SP 5000's are great all season tires. Go with 205/50 size you'll like it!
If you want summer only tires. Yokahoma Paradas are nice, so are the Dunlop SP 9000's. A lot of people like the nito 555's also.

Post some pics when your done!
