Wierd exhaust sound - please help diagnose!
Hey, my problem is that my exhaust system has just recently just started to make this wierd tingleing sound, almost sounds like detonation. Like bb's rattling inside the muffler, or exhaust piping. I have 3" piping, 3" cat, 3" resonator, and 3" magnaflow muffler. I will try to get a sound clip, but it sounds like this at idle and when I turn off the car. I thought it was just the metal cooling down, but it does this while the car is on at idle. What gives? Thanks
that is what mechanics call "a rattle". To find out where/what it is; wait till the exhaust has cooled for 5 min or so, then get under the car (on jackstands or lift of course). Take your fist and bang on the bottom of various pipes, body parts, mufflers etc.. You will probably find it that way.
Once you find it, replace, bend, weld, shim the part so it doesn't make any sound when you bang on the near by areas.

ok.......but why does it "rattle" when the car is sitting with the engine off?

how long does it make the noise for after the car is shut off? If it's the metal contracting as it cools then you would fix it like any undesirable exhaust noise. Sounds pretty odd though. I would only worry about the sound when it's running personally.

If your getting a lotta "twanging" noises after the car shuts off from the exhaust, its most likely just the metal contracting. It'll do this for a few mins after the car shuts off, especially in the winter time.
If it sounds like that at idle, then there's something odd.....just turn pound on a few things when the car is cold and try to find the area like the guy said
