Default Beware of STP fuel injection cleaner

My car was running really bad. Only 124.4 hp to the wheels.

See pics of that dyno run here https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=68948

Took my R to the dealer and everything was up to specs. Then took out the plugs and found all this Brown crap all over. Dealer asked if i had added an additive. The only 2 things I put in the cdar besides gas is 100 octane gas ( at expo) and STP Super concentrate fuel injection cleaner (black bottle). Dont think it was the gas. Switched the plugs and still felt sluggish.

Took my R to Atomic again today and unbolted from the cat back. Car ran fine and hit 160.1 hp (need help with dyno pic). When Charles unbolted the cat he noticed the same brown crap as my plugs. Looks as though the cat is clogged. Not saying STP is bad, BUT I know I won't be using any fuel injection clear. I'll pay the dealer to deal with that.

Now I just need to convince the dealer to replace the cat under warranty, even though "I" put the additive in.

they HAVE to replace the cat under federal law if your car has under 80,000 miles.

REALLY?? Where did you find that out? I might have to pay for it though. Should I notify STP??

this came with my carsound cat:

"Catalytic Converters are emission control devices which are designed to last the life of the vehicle and do not normally require replacement. Furthermore, if the vehicle is properly used and maintained, original converters are covered by the emission control warranty for 5 years or 50,000 miles. Federal law prohibits repair business from replacing these devices except under certain limited circumstances."

Pretty sure that 100 octane (at least 100RON) fuel is leaded. This won't do your cat any favours. If this is the case, I don't think it would be the STP.

Then again, maybe the STP is doing its job too well. Compare with:

As far as I know 100 octane is UNLEADED, anything above that IS leaded. Your right though, can't say for sure it's the STP. But I put 5 gallons of the 100 octane at the Expo and it ran fine. The spark plugs had that $hit all over it too. would show you a pic but don't know how to post it.

The problem is, you are not being accurate enough.

I presume you are talking about 100AKI? I'm fairly certain 100RON/Avgas is leaded.

That's pretty odd... I can understand that leaded fuel could indeed cause the cat to clog IF that is the case, if not, a bottle of STP shouldn't clog the cat and cause a lot of deposits on spark plugs.

I'm not a big fan of additives, but I still can't imagine it doing so much harm!

I couldn't believe it either. But like I said, I'm not sure if it is the additive or the 100 octane gas. I want to post the pic but don't know how, any help over here.

Well, at least there was no REAL harm done. At least I hope not... Maybe it's a good opportunity to look into a test pipe!

To post a pic, you must first put the pic on a website. Do you have your own website? If not, look for some free storage, or one of the sites that host photos.

Then put the url to the image inside a [ IMG ] [ / IMG ] pair (remove spaces).

Actually you can buy 100-105-110 octane here that is unleaded. I once saw 115 oct unleaded...but it was imported in from Elf.

I'm suprised they even try to make unleaded at such a high octane. Most of us that have an engine capable of taking advantage of 110+ octane don't have a cat anyways or are mostly race-only cars without cats.

People that bought it were doing drags with the petrol so they didn't have cats just straight pipes.
For around 40 bucks you can get full tank for of 100octane at some of gas stations here. Hi octane can normally only be bought at the track unless the station has special tank supply just for race fuels.
