I have never read anything regarding this here at H-T so i thought i would throw it out there. Getting out of my car one day i realized that there was a #inscribed in my drivers side window. Then as i was washing my car the same day i realized that the same # was in 6 different places the whole way around the car. After thinking about it for a minute i realized that it was the last 8 digits of my VIN. The previous owner obviously had them inscribed. So i called my insurance co and found out that it saves you some money. Were not talking a substantial amnt but every little bit helps. Anyways, the more i thought about it if you were to jack someones **** you would have to replace the windows or deface the windows in some manner to hide the inscription. I dont know where you can get it done because i didnt have it done myself, but for those of you who are looking for one more theft detterant there you go. Like all detterants its never any kind of guarantee because if they want it bad enought theyll get it, but i didnt know how many people even knew such a thing existed. so if you think its a good idea great, go do it. If you dont keep your negative thoughts to yourself, just trying to help.

Yeah thats about what its saving me as well. I mean even if it doesnt save you all that much money it might make a thief think twice about jacking your stuff.

Your VIN is at the front of your car in plain view without the inscriptions though. Why would it make it that much easier to steal though?

I don't think our cars are being stolen for their windows and/or fenders.
They want your motor/tranny/wheels/suspension/hubs, etc.
I doubt my insurance co. is that concerned about the theft of my car, their mostly worried about my driving record!

There are a number of fully visible VINS on your car already. The windshield is the most obvious, but not the only one.. I can think of quite a few others that people don't cover..

This is true but no matter what vins i tape over NY registration stickers have the vin printed on them, and have to be diplayed in your windshield

no they don't. Maybe YOUR dealer did so to make more money, but not all of them did so.

My '00 did not have the VIN engraved on the glass.

Thats what I was thinking..
Thats what I was thinking..
I cover all my visable VINs.
I saw the NY police put out a notice to car dealers about this to watch out for thieves coming to get keys made, so its obviously a method used.
I would bet good thieves probably dont even need to go to honda. They probably just type the vin into their laptop, and it cuts the key.

It would be impossible to decode what a key would look like from the VIN, unless someone had hacked that information direct from Acura.

Got it for sticker so they didn't make too much more.

I dont know how it works, but my guess is there are probably 100 or so keys for our cars, and maybe another 100 radio signals they put out. Acura probably has a database matching each vin to each key combination. All it would take is 1 person on the inside. 1 'janitor', 1 thief, etc to break in and grab the database. Hell, that database is probably worth tens of thousands of dollars on the black market.
