Default 4th gen Glass Sunroof? What if we tried lexan?

Yep, 4th gen Prelude glass sunroof.

The car is not my cup of tea... but I wonder how he did the glass sunroof? It's curved and sealed to fit the contour of the roof. It's labled as "custom."

Now, my question is, do you think you could get away with doing this in Lexan? Or would it simply warp, look like *** and end up leaking? I'm sure I'm not the only person to think of this... but I can't find it on a search anywhere.

This may be a more unique angle of lightweight sunroof's than carbon fiber. (sorry Satan)

I've never played with Lexan, so I'm not sure about it's qualities... what do you guys think? Worth a shot?

i'd try it if it looked good. if not what is the weight difference w/the glass ones. also you would have to tint it dark, cause that sun during the day would suck, unless this custom setup came w/the sliding thing inside.

I'd just take the lexan, bolt it in place, and seal it.

It looks like he just cut and bolted it into place. He's got rubber plugs right where he drilled straight through it.

You would just have to get the height right and you'd be fine.

What is the size difference between 4th and 5th gen sunroof? I was under the impression both were the same size, but I'm often wrong.

Last week my car got frozen pretty good, and when I went to open the sunroof this week, I heard a loud pop, and a spring on the pass. side popped up. Haven't looked at it since then, I just closed it. Made a real bad scraping souond when closing, but I really didn't want it to stick open and it was 2AM and I was on the highway.

Right - so I kind of hoped I could replace the whole thing with a 5th gen sunroof.. motor and all. I don't really want glass at all.

Well,The glass sunroofs were custom but not avialible through the dealership. A aftermarket company produced a very limited amount and now have been discontinued, of course. I remember about 2 years ago I saw one on Ebay it went for about $250 plus shipping. FYI

Yes but its not a flat piece of glass, you have to make it contoured with the roof line, how the hell do you do that, other than custom made glass

I remember checkin into it back in the day, and the only place I found that carried them was a place like SunRoofDoctor.com or something; I emailed me and the kit was like $300!!!

And no, people have already tried switching out newer prelude sunroofs for the older ones and vice versa, and none of them are swappable.

I would be really interested in a glass piece, if it were tinted pretty dark. Heck, even if it wasn't! It prob. wouldn't be too hard to tint myself.

Lexan seems like a good choice, since it is easily available and cut, and it can be molded by heat. The prob. I see w/ that is wouldn't it yellow out?

Comments:

My stock sunroof is rusted and I was looking into replacing it. It is a metal piece stock, but I am looking at replacing it with a glass slider if possible. Please contact me if you have any info. Thanks.
