Car smells like fumes horribly, and sometimes smokes?????
Just recently my car started smelling really bad like exhaust fumes/gasoline. For anyone that has a hollow cat or a resonator in place of one knows the smell I am talking about. I have a 97 Accord LX with a cat back and test pipe in place of the cat itself. Ive always had that no cat smell but in the past week my car reeeeks of it BAD!!!! Also my friend says that sometimes when I am getting on it real hard and I shift that a cloud of smoke comes out and it stinks horribly from behind. Does anyone have a suggestion of what it could be? Any help would be appreciated.
I'm guessing your not throwing any CEL's....
Is that white-smoke puff on each shift? Or on each shift under full throttle?
Coolant mixing with gas? Head Gasket failure? - Usually smells like rotten eggs. Sounds like your running super rich...and you've misfiring.
How many miles on the car/engine?

Im not totally sure on what color the smoke is when it actually smokes cuz I have heard black blue and white from my friends, they are not good enough to trust, I need to see it for myself. I am throwing a CEL though but its from my testpipe in place of the cat, which has been like that for almost a year now. And it doesnt always smoke on every shift.

Usually if you are throwing a code your ecu will run rich, so that might be it....but I might be talking from my behind. But it shouldn't do it to where it smokes......I am interested as to what it is.
Yea, I thought that too, so when I got the Gutted cat thig I bought a vafc also to lean it out a bit, but its been about 7 months since that and now this.
You might want to look at your distributor (at least its a place to start) and check your ignitor points, check for corrosion on your plug wires, pull your spark plugs, if they have black stuff on them (usually carbon) and if they reek of gasoline, they your car is running too rich, this will give you a place to begin looking and start pinpointing systems. Also a clean set of plugs will do wonders also a distributor cap will too. And you aren't throwing any codes?? Does it do it only under WOT? How about warming up idles different? after warm idles? Check o2 sensor? Check into this and keep us posted, I am interested.
swap out o2 sensors w/ a buddy and see if helps. excessive fumes/smell/black smoke between shifts all point to a o2 problem and running rich.
an o2 can be bad and not throw a code btw.

Yea, it smells like this warm or cold, it dont matter. I had Honda about 4 months ago replace the distributor cap and wires and plugs. I will check the plugs again to check out to see if they are fouled out in any way or if they smell like gasoline. And I am still not sure if it smokes just under WOT but thats what my friend said. Also if it was rings or if my motor was going bad, wouldnt the car have less power and smoke all the time especially under WOT? Ill also have to check the O2 sensor/swap it with a friend to see if thats the problem, it has already been replaced once with a autozone POS. I appreciate the responses guys, keep them coming!
thats ur o2.. had the same problem on my h a few months ago and the o2 sensor had gone bad... it was throwing out black smoke when hitting it hard and the car smelled like a$$ inside and out, around infront wherever. time for a new o2 and reset the ecu.

So the smell and smoke went away right after you replaced it? Also, did the car run any different with the O2 sensor that was making your car smoke and smell horrible?
