Default B17 internals in a b16a

I have heard of it being done, but is this true. When I buy the main (crank) journal bearings do I just use the color code system? Is this accurate? I am looking for some assurance that I am doing the right thing, thanks for any help.

1. yes you will just get a little more compression.
2.yes
3. I dont really see that big of a hp gain with the amount of money you are going to spend

Nah it is not like that, i had a b17 shipped to me, unfortunately the idiot shipped it in a plastic bag, yeah, that is right a plastic bag, some bad block damage, and all. I do have a b16a block sitting around, this is the reason for asking. Thank you for your help.

Yes, it works. You'll need to use the B17 crank of course, and the B16 rods. Also, you'll need to get custom JE or the like pistons, and have them move the wrist pin up a bit to compensate.

They do make quite a bit of HP.

Thanks, I was thinking that the blocks were identical, and that I could jsut swap internals over, Thanks again.

Uh, no. The B17 and B16 are identical blocks. All you have to do is swap over the crank and rods. You can use any B-series VTEC pistons you want. You will gain more torque and more compression.

Doing it this way would retain the B16A's ideal rod ratio, but yeah, the blocks are identical so it's not necessary.

I'd use the stock B17A rods & crank with some B16B pistons.

Actually no, the rod stroke ratio would change. It would lower it a little but not the to point of where the B18C blocks are at.

Do NOT use the b16 rods....they will not work in a b16 block using a b17 crank...they would probably work in a b18 block though.

Just going to use the b17 internals with the 9.6.1 comp. ratio and turbo it.

The B17a is not completely identical to the B16a. The heads, yes, but not the blocks. The rod/stroke ratio (as others mentioned) will not be as precise as stock with a different crank and rod set. It'll work but not as smoothly as using all B17a parts (rods, crank). You have all the parts so you don't need to interchange.

BTW related question: the B17a is a "bored out" B16a, does anyone the exact dimmensions?

The B17A has the exact same bore as all other B-series engines (81mm).

The extra displacement comes from a longer stroke. I don't remember the exact length of the B17A stroke, but it is very close to 81.0 mm. The B17A has almost perfectly square bore/stroke dimensions.

And what I meant about the rod ratio is that IF you use the B17A crank with the B16A rods and custom pistons with higher wrist pins you should be able to keep the B16A rod ratio, or very near it. If however you use all B17A parts you will have the B17A rod ratio, which is not as good as the B16A's but better than the B18's.

The B17A uses the exact same block as the B16A. The only differences are the crank, rods and pistons.

mycroft: thanks for the explanation.

BTW when i said the blocks are different, I meant to include the crank etc...
