Default Motor dont wanna go...

I have a completely stock 98 civic EX, it aint much (at all) but its a work in progress, right now im workin on the money part... anyways I had a quick question, I know I have no torque OR hp for that matter but when I step on the gas comin out of 2nd its almost as if the gas peddle has the opposite effect sometimes (sometimes more prominent then others) Like the harder you push the gas the more it hesitates and then the second it hits 2.5-3 grand its like it wakes up and decides to go... I know vtec but that doesnt (or isnt supposed to) come in till 5g or somethin (correct me if im wrong)...

Am I just slow? Is there a way to free this up? It's kinda wierd to step on the gas and the rpm slows and the cars hesitates...

sorry for the stupid question but....yah
thanx,
-jana

Some simple thing to check would be your spark plugs or you could have an intake manifold leak.

Get a new set of ngk spark plugs and put them in. They are cheap and are easy to change.

plug type ngk ZFR5F-11
torque specs for plugs 156 in-lb
plug gap 0.039-0.043 in.

Hope this helps

From what I have seen over the years. I would consider a distributor problem. Usually when pushing harder on the gas the car chugs more or loses power. Something to do with the distributor weights in some cases. Check timing too.

hey sorry im posting on my brothers name but this is d16 madwoman... anyways i checked spark plugs just a minute ago and they are pretty ragged out... the electrode is very worn down and there is a fair amount of deposits... in other words they need to be changed and ill prolly go ahead and get some new wires while im at it... i like to make sure i (over)do it the first time well. Thanks fer yals advice and ill check out those other things you suggested also if the problem persists.

Sounds like a bad distributor coil to me: those are textbook symptoms of said problem. I replaced mine with an external MSD Blaster and it works like a charm.

Yah i got someone whos got a timing light but It'll be a while till I can get out to his place... Next pay check im gonna grab some new spark plugs and some wires... Im also gonna try to call the guy up with the timing light and we can check that out and while im there the distributer (sry sp is terrible), but that prolly wont be till christmas break... thanks for all yals help, ill keep it posted on how things turn out.

just curious, i dont think my car needs one but ill look in my manual. but what is a
"ballast resistor"? I was readin on a website to buy that MSD Blaster and thought Id ask.

Timing doesn't spontaneously change without a catastrophic accompanying set of circumstances that allert you to the problem. If it skipped teeth, you'd know it. It's almost 100% not the timing, but hell, it never hurts to check.

As far as a ballast resistor, you don't need one...at least I've never used em and I've installed 5 MSD systems on everything from a '79 Corvette to a '94 S10 to several hatchbacks, so...
