I'm in the middle of doing my timing belt change on a 2000 SI and have a question. Right now my both of my cam gears are one tooth from the up mark being straight up. The up arrows look like this / \ so they are the equal on both sides. The crank lines up fine with its timing mark. Should I move the cams so they are both straight up and parallel? I'm almost positive that they didn't jump time when I was getting the crank pulley off. Thanks for the help.

 

be sure that all marks are line up that is crank line up with the mark on the block, the 2 cam gear a line up with the word up and 22 timing mark facing each other. other wise your timing will be off...

Yes, line the marks on the sprokets even with the top of the head. The up arrow is just to get you in the ballpark.

 

I just put a new belt on mine lastnight so this is still fresh in memory...

Like mentioned above makes sure the crank pulley is lined up and then for the cams the arrows should be parallel and dtraight up. There will be lines on the sides of the cam gears that run horizontal aswell make sure they line up too and you'll be set.

Tighten up your tensioner using the suggested technique, then turn the motor over by hand a few time to make sure everything stays lined up.

Take your time and make sure you got everything perfect, as it is extreamly critical you don't #$%^ this up. Then have one of these and relax.

 

Thanks for all the help. I just finished it and everything works fine. Next time I do this I must have a lift. No more of this garage floor stuff.
