Default Type of gas in GS-R

Hello everyone...I got my 97 GS-R last week. So far I'm using 91 octane. I get roughly 325 KM's ...about 200-210 miles on a full tank. I dunno...seems kinda expensive but maybe its just because I never owned a car before so never really experienced paying for gas (only 16 here ). Anyone know if thats pretty good or got any suggestions or what? I never really floor it in my GS-R because I'm not the type of person who likes to bag out cars ...also its snowy here so if you step on the gas, all your tires do is just spin ...can't wait for all the snow to melt... Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

The way to see if you can use a cheaper gas is get a v-afc controller. It has a feature where it gives you a value for knock. If your engine doesn't get any knock in other words detonation then your fine using even 87 octane. In a gsr though since your compression ratio is rather high I wouldn't recommend going below 91 octane.

The ECU will detune the motor slightly for less octane. Your performance and gas mileage will suffer. If it says premium, put premium in. They don't just say it for no reason.

I thought Al Bundy drove a Dodge Dart? And burned whatever gas his neighbors put in their cars.

The distance you are getting per tankful sounds kind of low. Is it mostly in town or highway? Are you getting the tank full and waiting for the low fuel light? If so, you are only getting about 20mpg which is really low except for low speed in traffic type of driving for a GSR.

apexi would be my recommendation; user friendly and reasonably priced.

City and highway at same time. I go on the highway on the way home... I wait til it shows low fuel and a bit past that...

dont let ur gas tank run too low... gunk in ur gas tank can suck to ur motor.... why risk damaging it.... o yea.. change ur motor oil... then try ur gas mileage again.

the car's computer will basically "see" that you've put lower octane in, and reduce performance automatically in order to keep the engine from getting damaged.

i was never under the impression that you needed a vafc in order to do this....but maybe i'm wrong.

Ever since i put my car back to stock, i've been using 87 octane. No problems and I get better gas mileage than using 91 octane. When using 91 octane, i would average 270 miles per tank. Now I average around 310 miless. This is 60% city driving, 40% highway

i see the specs for the gsr, and mileage are 25/30? how come are you guys are getting so low mileage?

"Fuel Economy(City/Highway): 25/30 miles per gallon (Manual)
Range (City/Highway): 331/408 with full tank (Manual)"

Judging from your post I would say your increase in gas mileage is due to driving habits and having a stock car. I raised my tires pressure to what the Acura book says and my gas mileage increased. I get about 310 mile per tank. When I fill up she takes about 11gallons.

Why would dirty oil decrease gas mileage? Can anyone comment on that?

i run 91 octane, reamber in japan they only have 100 octane so i figure the more octane i can run the better since the car was ment for 100 octane

It might be my driving habits, although it seems the same for me. Anyways, when my car was modded, i was averaging 220-230 miles per tank

Whats up with all the posts in this thread?

Sure, you can run 87, but why would you? You spend all this money on a car, then more if you mod it...and youre going to skimp out on 20c a gallon?

The ECU will sense knocking and pull your timing, hence run shitty. Why would you want to do that? I ALWAYS use premium.

I don't understand why people put 87 octane in their car.. the difference is literally, what.. 10 cents? that comes up to what.. 2-3 dollars more on a full tank? Jesus people - If you can afford a GSR and it's insurance rates then you sure as hell can pay an extra 2-3 dollars a fillup.. Take care of it
