need help, can't tell if its timing problem or something
ok at first i needed a new water cause my car was leaking water through it. So after get that done we had a hard time with the timing. Its like the car was steady shaking for no reason so we redid the timing like 5 times but the car still runs weird. I took it for a ride but its like the car has no power and everytime i gas there is a loud back fire like a poping sound. When getting home i seen smoke coming from the exhaust. I looked under the car and seen the cat converter red like it was on fire. Anyone got advice?
My GOD. You and SMOOTH97LUDE have the same damn English problem. I can barely understand the concept you're trying to type. Jesus.

A new water what... pump? Radiator cap? Thermostat housing? WTF are you talking about?

I'm not even going to try to point out that this only confuses everyone.

Every time you hit the gas in gear? Every time you let off of the gas? Every time you rev the gas? What? Help us out here....

I hate to be rude, but yeah, I have advice for you... LEARN TO TYPE ENGLISH BETTER. It helps US help YOU.
My God... alright, now... tell us what you drive. 4th gen, 5th gen? VTEC? What?
If I managed to Forest Gump my way through your post well enough, you replaced the waterpump and messed with the timing belt. Now your car runs like ***. Well Einstien, I'd say you either have a bad timing belt tensioner (which causes the timing to retard significantly and produce a lot of heat.... hence the glowing cat) or you put the timing belt on INCORRECTLY after fiddling with it.
Either way, setting the timing won't help you, I'd take it back apart and see what you screwed up.

We made sure that the cams and all the stuff were at its points but i'm not to sure about what needs to be where my dad does and he's pretty sure that everythings right. Tell me what is there to do
Thanks for answering ANY of my questions.... I can't help you without further information.
Has your dad ever played with the motor you have? (Which we don't even know what that is) Do you have a helms manual? Do you have any manual at all telling you what to do or are you just trying to go by what looks right?
Well then maybe you should have your dad tell us what the two of you did. Also, what exactly do you mean the "cams and all the stuff were at its points"? Were the marks on your cam GEARS lined up at TDC? Was the crank pulley lined up at TDC?
well if your timing belt was replaced correctly, are you jumping the blue connector under your radio when you set the timing? if not, its a blue connector with a blue/white wire and a brown/white wire. put in the jumper wire, then set the timing

for all we know this kid is running a 1984 SOHC lude. *shrug*

ok let me clear somethings up!
I have a 92 prelude with and h23 motor. I got a new water pump put in. Then, put the cam gear and crank pulley at TDC but still ended up with the same shaking of the motor. Now, when driving it i would hit the gas and the car goes no where, it lags. It does the same when i rev it. It also gives a back fire popping sound.
now let me get this right, you were saying that there is a blue connector wire under my radio that needs to be connected with the jumper wire, am i right?
let me know. do u have to do that everytime u replace the timing belt?

I'm drunk right now, and on pain pills for my crushed foot, so I'm not in a good place to tell you yes or no on the wire thing on a non-vtec Prelude.
But, it can't hurt to try it. The blue connector can be jumped with anything as simple as a paperclip folded into a U shape. Poor mans jumper... I never leave home without one.
Now, if that doesn't work, you need to take a second look at your timing belt setup because it sounds a WHOLE lot like the timing is extremely retarded.

ok now, i found that blue connector wire u were talking about. what do i do with it? and what does that have to do with the timing of the motor.
and where is my tensioner at? (h23)

well on a vtec lude, you have to jump that connector when you set the timing.
so the ecu doesn't adjust the timing while your adjusting it.
i'm also not sure if its neccesary on the h23, but it can't hurt. i thhink the fact that its there must mean something.
jump the connector, set timing and see if things get better.

glowing exhuast is usualy caused by too much timing retard and/or too much fuel.
how well does the car idle???
what about the distributor? did you even take it off at any time during the timing belt change?? if you did not touch the dizzy, then you didn't align something properly on the belt

my car's idle is terrible, some mechanic said i need a new idle air control and it cost like 300 bucks at an auto shop. i think your right about my distributor cause we did miss with it to make it idle right
I still don't know what you guys mean by jumping my connector wire. I found it so what do i do with it (i'm kinda new to this)

take the blue connector, there are two holes on it. Take a wire or paperclip and stick the ends in the holes, this closes the circuit. Now set the timing to specs, then turn off the car. Remove the jumper wire and go to your underhood fuse box. remove the clock/radio fuse for 15 secs, then put it back in and start your car. Your timing will now be correct and this will hopefully solve your problem.

when you say set the timing to specs w/the car on
are you talking -via the dizzy-

yeah but i think i found what the problem is. A friend of mine said that he had the same problem with his honda. He car need a new cat converter cause it was clogged up and getting red hot. That cause the air to be trapped in the exhaust system, therefore made the car not function correctly
