I think you'll be cool. Other than an obvious check engine light. Oh, and remember your going to squirt some clutch fluid out of the line when you press the clutch in to start it. You might want to put some more support under the motor too. Isn't there only one motor mount holding it in right now? I always used a carjack to suport my motor.

if im not mistaking, the stater bolts on to the tranny. so how will you turn the engine witout the starter?
umm... why do you want to do this?

the starter does bolt to tranny.
ONe of the starter bolts does go all the way through to the block. Maybe if you had a spacer of some sort the same thickness as tranny housing by starter you could bolt it in place enough to engage flywheel. Just make sure stater is tightened down.

This really isnt the safest or smartest Idea but I understand your reasoning.

What happened to the tranny?

If you can spin the flywheel you should be able to start it with your key.

It wouldn't be a good idea, but technically you could probably spin the flywheel with a socket and rachet on one of the PP bolts, and then have someone in the car cranking.

Not gonna happen without something to mount the starter to . And I would NOT try styleTeg's idea...that sounds like a great way to get hurt BAD.. IF it did start that way you will never get the socket off fast enoug . I would flip a coin heads keep it tails let them take it . Unless you have a good idea that it will run without starting it .

To Start it you need to get the crank spinning. You can somehow spin it from the crank pully side or by the flywheel. Leave the Key in the on position Have someone gave it 1/4 throttle, Spin the crank somehow and if you get is going fast enough it will start. But be super careful. Once it starts you will have a socket flying all over the place. If you have a breaker bar that's worst.

The easiest way to do it I think would be to take the back wheel off of your bicycle, wrap the chain around the flywheel, and pedal REALLY fast...

OMFG

I've actually used an electric drill to start a mo-ped kinda like this once... Basically I found the right size socket for the crank pulley and let it rip. Obviously an electric drill isn't going to be powerful enough to turn the motor over, however you might be able to rig something up... Our boat has a rope that you can wind around the flywheel and start the motor by hand. This has worked great on the boat... maybe you could get some strong rope and rig something like this up. Becareful though cause the rope MUST be released when the engine actually does start... (otherwise it could be bad... real bad)

people runs engines on stands. I'm surprised anything "new" ever gets done on this site, with 90% of posts saying "no you can't do that" Call a junkyard, maybe import auto salvage, and see if they can give you advice.

Im not saying that it cant happen, Im just saying its the biggest ****-for-brains idea Ive heard all day. I mean, the guy doesnt even really have a good reason to do this, other than to see if the motor is ok. I dont see why he would think the motor is messed to begin with. All im saying is, it would be easier to throw a tranny in the car, see if it runs, and then take the tranny back out if you had to, rather than come up with some half-assed plan of starting it another way.

no , i do have a good reason , think about it , i dont have the money for a tranny , the insurence comp wants the get the car , and then i will have to buy it back , if the engine doesnt work, then its not really a smart idea to buy the car back now is it
