I hate lude trannys!
I can not shift into reverse! I have been battling this damn reverse problem in my 5th gen for too damn long now. If I was more educated in trannys than I would definetely attempt to fix this myself, but I am not. I have searched several times and found many tech members who have had similar problems. I have gone through conclusions such as.....
1. Not enough transmission fluid
2. 5th gear syncro package
3. 5th gear shift fork
4. Cable linkage
5. Clutch master cylinder
There are a couple more that I can't remember right now. I have read a thread that says to slowly rev the engine then depress the clutch while applying pressure to reverse. I just tried this right now in my garage. This seemed to be the most productive of all the methods I have read. Reverse actually slightly went in, but I started to hear a nasty grind that prompted me to stop. I have come to the conclusion that I will not be able to fix this myself. My car is not under warranty, so I was wondering if anybody who had this similar problem can tell me how much they spent to get it fixed.

Actually, its likely cheaper to buy a junk-yard trans (one that is good!) and use it, rather than spend 1000bucks to have yours fixed........ you can probably get a trans for 500$ and another 250 for the install
I have the same problem with my transmission, it does it at the worst times too...if i accidently pull out too far in a intersection and try to back up a bit...but oh my car won't go in reverse! I feel your hate! Ive had many friends that have had tranny's go out on their ludes too. ONe just got a jdm h22 with a stage 3 clutchmasters...Im waiting for his tranny to go soon
when reverse does not go in right away either one of these things usually clears it up:
-while still in neutral release and then repress the clutch, then go to reverse
-while clutch is still depressed move the shifter to another gear position (don't use fifth, first or fourth works most naturally for me) and then back to reverse. usually goes right in.
I think there is no synchro for reverse.

This is true.
This is true.
The reverse idler gear gets pushed down in between two other gears. If the other gears are not sitting just right it will not let you in. The teeth are beveled to help remedy this, but does not always work. The best thing to do is move forward a tad and try again. You can also very slowly depress the clutch while putting some pressure down into reverse and as soon as the gears start to move it will drop it. I usually just end up rocking my body really hard and that moves the gears enough to let it drop in.

I dont know if I agree on that because my reverse went out and it took me 6+ months before I finally fixed it.

question about rebuilding for anyone with some know how...Is it better to rebuild, or buy a new one(junkyard)...IM gona rebuild it myself because i have been looking at what needs to be done and it doesn't seem too hard as long as I keep everything organized. I know the gears have a press fit on the mainshaft, and requires some sort of persuasion...but im not sure how much the syncros and what ever else cost depending on what should be replaced...all i know is my friends jdm h22a with a stage 3 clutch and nothing else done can rip through the gears fast, and with mine its almost like i have to granny shift it while racing or else 2nd gear will grind horribly every time
They all have this problem.. basically, the 5th gear syncros and hubs consistantly "grind" on each other, therefore wearing down the face of the selector ring, and you can't slide the ring from 5th, into reverse..
Just something we all have to deal with, take care of your 5th gear!

first of all theres no trans fluid in a manual its gear oil , second prelude tranny's like other honda trans. experience vapor lock when the vehicle is shut off because all of the air is sucked out through the vent tube which causes components to remain in the same place with resting (if you follow ) because the last connect motion was forward- the shift fork somtimes is not able to engage on the reverse gear because of its positioning , try putting the car in first gear before you try to reverse , if the gear enagages let the clutch depress enough to initiate slight forward motion , once the car had moved the positioniong of the gears it should go right in ...
Something that I have always done, since I have more problems when the car is cold, is I put it in reverse before I shut if off and get out. Has always worked on every car I have owned, especially my H22 Accord.
