Civic sputtering before 4 grand
OK, I still have yet to get this one. 94 civic dx with the 1.5 soch motor. It sputters real bad before 4000 rpm and I think is running extremely rich. At 4 grand, everything seems to clean up fine except there's still a small hint of the sputtering. I have changed plugs and wires, put on different injectors, and still have the same issue. Now I know the next obvious step would be to change dist. cap and rotor, maybe fuel filter and new air filter, basically to finish up a general tune up. I was also thinking it may be a sensor... wether it be a o2 or tps, but I am not sure if that would have thrown a code or not. In a nutshell, I am looking to see if anyone else has any odea what else it could be before I take off with this. Thanks in advanced.
imo the fuel filter seems to be a good guess.
what about your timing?
has someone done your timing belt recently?
I know when i did mine the first time it was a tooth off and would sputter like your car seems to be. check and see if you crank pulley tdc mark matches the cam tdc.

im guessing its the O2 sensor. mine did that a long time ago and it took me forever to figure out. i replaced so much **** with no luck. then i changed the 02 sensor and reset the ECU. problem solved
Timing was recently done by me. I had a broke valve and therefore had to remove, reinstall the head. I do not have any tdc markings on the crank (long story) so I did it by sticking a screw driver into cylinder 1 and waiting for it to be at tdc. I will try the maf today as well. As for the O2, wouldn't I be throwing a code?

Well, yes an no... the sputtering never happened before I did the head work, but the thing is it runs fine until the car has warmed up. When I first started it, it was great, then after about 5-10 minutes driving it around, it bogs out in the lower rpm range.
The timing seems to be perfectly fine, problems only happen when warmed up

I am not trying to be resistant or anything, but that was happening way before I even did the head work... At 4 grand, I do get a kick in the motor, but this is due to the fact I am running rich as nuts before 4 grand then it leans out... I will take it to a professional shop to check the timing, but I really think it is not the timing since this has been happeneing for a long time and I have done many timing jobs since the 4 grand thing has been happeneing
Someone has brought up the possibility of my ecu taking a crap... This seems it would be a more pricey thing to look into, so I will set that on the back burner, but does anyone else think this could be the culprit? Or would that throw a code also?

You pretty much answered your question.
I give props to newbies who post the way you did!
Complete the tune-up, remember, your engine is only as strong as the weakest link... i.e. rotor, filter, etc...
If that does not solve the problem I would look into resetting your ECU after the tune up.
Have you also considered carbon build up cleaner? Use in the intake manifold...

I am pretty competant at working on these Hondas (obviously not at spelling the word competant...), so I am pretty sure I'll figure it out, but I am a typical lazy American looking to see if anyone knew what it may be already. I am not sure where you would want me to look for carbon build up. As I mentioned above, I had some head cleaning done when I broke my valve since the head was off already. The head was chemical dumped and blasted as well as the rest of the valves. So everything in the top of the motor has been cleaned (there was though a ton of build up on the valve prior to the work). What do you mean by "use the intake manifold..."?? Other than that, I am diving back into my car this weekend to try and finish it, thanks for everyones help.
damn i got a 94 ex coupe and mine is doin the same thing
like if im on the gas slightly and im just crusin it fine but when im under 4 frand and i step on it
it dont go no where it just starts bogging sounds like its choking and not goin nowhere.
i wanted to know whats wrong
i think its the TPS sensor thats doin it
cuase my check engine lights on....
