Question about main & rod bearings???
Hi,
This may sound like a dumb question but is it safe to apply engine assy. lube to both side of the main bearing or just the side that faces the crank?

You don't want the bearings to move on the back sides, that would be bad.

Yep, I'd go as far as wiping out the block and backside of the bearing before inserting it, you don't want anything between the bearing and block.
