How in the hell did I do this to my diff???

How in the hell did I do this to my diff? Please advise:)
Well I finally took the tranny out of my 93-cx. And split it open to replace all five bearings. But decided I should remove the differential since the little metal pieces I found in there were not from any of the bearings. And I found this...How in the heck did this happen? Has anybody ever done this before? Just curious how this binds up and snaps off this locking pin or whatever it is.

Any feedback would be great, Thanks guys.
Also is a d16y8 worth putting an LSD in? It is a sohc vtec swap in there right now and I kind of like the D-series engine in there.

If you are going to stay D-series, YES an LSD is worth it. Its always a great upgrade.
