My 97 EX civic just started suckin down gas (200 miles per tank) for no apparent reason. I didnt change anything recently, and i can smell the unburnt fuel comin out the back. I have 85 thou. miles. Any ideas?

 

check your oxygen sensor

 

i thought the o2 sensors on civ's were good for 100,000 miles? Man they are like 300 bux a piece too... i was afraid of that. Im gonna swap out the TPS and external coil, too.

 

whats the reference voltage on the O2 at WOT ? and idle ?

I highly doubt a new TPS or external coil is going to fix your problem...

go to autozone get a bosch universal for your honda, about 70$

DO NOT TOUCH THE TPS SENSOR, you would have other driveability problems if it was your TPS and you are just gonna cause needless headaches trying to recalibrate the new one.

o2 sensors dont usually last to 100,000 miles.

Most of them do.

 

recet your ecu. (enjine controll unit)
to do this disconect your battery for about 20 min, and then start it and let it warm up on its own with no reving.
and when you drive just dont take it past 3k f(or a long period of time like 2-3 weeks )
trust me itll work

 

2-3 weeks?! dude no!

it takes 20 seconds to reset the ecu, pull ecu fuse wait 20 seconds, replace ecu fuse.

Ok first off don't listen to this guy.
Second do the common thing and check your plugs. Make sure the engine is cold.
Do a search you can find out what kind of readings your getting.

I replaced mine about two months ago W/ NGT, and I dont think it gets any better mileage. actully I'm thinking worse. I pulled my ECU fuse yesterday, so I'll have to see what thr results are.

There are other causes of poor fuel mileage than o2 sensors.

 

can't bad spark plugs cause poor gas milage also? someone confirm please...
