yeah it totally depends on how much practice and experience you get. i learned moving from a stop in a half hour...got the hang of it in a week...and now i shift unconciously

Step 1: Find a really steep hill
Step 2: Park a really expensive car right behind yours at the top of the hill
Step 3: Don't roll back!!!
Step 4: Now that you can do hills you are good to go

i am teaching my bro how to drive stick shift. took him 20 min to learn to stop and go without any trouble. however, from my experience, this is not all that cuz when u go on a real road, u don't just think about stopping and going. others things will distrack you, therefore you will have to master it before going on a real road. took me 2 days to do the whole thing tho.
i'd practice on a beater car.....and get to understand how it works..
that's about it
the others have great suggestions..
as for me and my girl, i took like an hour..
my girl took 5 mins lol

I knew what to do before I got it, that made it alot easier...ever rode a dirt bike or ATV? it helps just to know the concept of a clutch and stuff, using your hands on a dirt bike or ATV is easier, so getting used to the clutch pedal was kinda weird. After about a week, I was gaining experience in real shifting, its been about 3 weeks now, and I'm chirping 2nd, and 3rd every time. Just becareful man, if you do **** up, hope you don't grind really horrible, and also, hope your fuel cut off is working. I LOVE FUEL CUT OFF, for all the times I've missed trying to practice and gain experience, if it wasn't there, I could def see my car just sitting there, blown.
Have fun.

hmmm lets master the basics of stick shift. including rev-matching - so you're safe....then when you learn it all, go to the track and mess around.

that'd suck if you stalled in the middle of a left turn in a busy intersection

The hardest part for me was keeping it from rolling back while at a light on a uphill!
For the first month having my GS-R, I changed my driving routes to avoid those.

i've got one advice that hasn't been covered....
if you ever take your "stick-shift equipped" car out in the open roads and WHEN you do STALL, please don't freak out even if people honk at you (well that makes it worse), but just try to stay as calm as possible and start your car and remember what you've learned; baby'ing out first gear. Else, you will stall once more...
remember...practice makes perfect.

you claim, that it took you two days to "master" driving a stick...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
you must be:
a) a natural pro driver
b) bragging and lying at the same time
c) none of the above
