Its a breather that replaces the oil breather line. The line runs to intake pipe and dumps excess oil. You can also connect an oil catch can to it.

Do you usually dump excess oil into your intake?

First off it is smog equipment....the hose anyway.
Its to compensate for exsessive pressure under your valve cover in the head.

The hose keeps the Oil vapor from going out into the open air and polluting the atmosphere.

The breather keeps the Oil vapor from entering your intake and taking away performance.

The oil vapor takes up space when entering the combustion chamber....space that we would prefer to be occupied by air and fuel.

No.

All these dam noobs are ruining the rep of honda-tech.

If you look at a stock intake, you'll see that there is a pipe comming out of the valve cover and going into the intake pipe.

After gettting after market intake, some people keep the pipe some people put breather there. your prefference.

It's main purpose is not to release the oil.

Your engine is desinged to suck in air, and all the excessive air which the engine doesn't need, the engine puts it back into the intake pipe.

People put breather there, so that air can just release out.

<---has a hose and still can't pass smog cause it is a "heater" hose and not a "PCV" hose!

LOL, at the beggining of your post I thought you were going to set everyone straight. Oh well, i'll do it.

The purpose of the breather pipe/filter is to allow clean filtered air into the engine so that the PCV system works properly. When the PCV valve opens air goes into the engine through the breather pipe.

To add one more informative post to this topic which has been led astray:

The filter is there for one thing: looks
Hose: recycles air back into the head
Filter: same thing as without anything, but allows pressure release without anything getting back into your motor

Yes & No's

Yes it is the same as having a hose
No it will not affect hp's if you switch
Yes it is a good idea to have one or the other

AND Finally: No it is not wise to buy this for the simply fact that teh filter can get clogged, leaving you with pressure build up, which inturn could blow seals

Looks better than the hose. And $10 for an OBX filter at any performacne shop.
