NEED Opinions....did i f*ck up my rings????
i finally finished build my motor last night. and wheni started it everything seemed fine, i let it idle for a few minutes then i took it for a little spin. at first it was smoking quite a bit but eventually it stopped as i started to drive it. i just drove for like 5 minutes and when i got back to my garage i decided to check the timing. while i was doing so i started to notice it start to idle kinda rough, but then it would smooth out and be fine, a min or 2 later i noticed a little smoke come out of my endyn breather can and then a min or 2 later out of my breather on the valve cover. (im not sure if this is the correct order it all happened but its the order i noticed it in). it kept idleing kinda weird so i went to look at my gauge cluster and the temp gauge was 3/4 of the way up, so i shut it off immediately. apparently my fan never turned on for some reason. the car was only running a total of 15mins. do u think i fucked up my rings from the slight overheating? or is this normal to have a little blow by as the rings seat?? thanks
I'd say the blowby normal not sure about the overheating.. You are meant to use a special sort of oil for running in engines I am not what it is someone will know. Do you know how your supposed to seat the the rings??? If not talk to someone who does. Goodluck

i did use sae 30ND oil
i did use sae 30ND oil
the oil isnt a problem.
if you overheated you could have ruined the headgasket's seating or warped the head's surface. Check your coolant for oil, check your dipstick for chocolate milk. Lick it. If it tastes like nesquik you are the winnnar. Na dont do that. ANYWAY im acting strange today...
if you have oil in your coolant you blew the headgasket, which can easily cause overheating. If the fan wasnt running and you left the car stationary, that will cause overheating too. The smoking is tough to say. If your rings havent worn the cross hatch down yet there could be a lack of seal between the cylinder walls and rings- its tough to say.
If i were you id try not to sweat it. Blowing the rings out requires more than just overheating- it requires a poor bore/hone or high combustion pressure. Im leaning towards a blown headgasket or improer bore / hone. Make sure your PCV system isnt clogged either, but from the sound of it you are just running opem atmosphere.

how do u recommend i drive it to complete the ring break in? its only been driven 3 miles and idled for a total of like 15minutes
the rings are brand new JE rings gapped to .017 postioned perfect....the was some minor scarring along the cylinder walls but the hone took about most of them but not all...just to give u more info

did you bore / hone or just hone? how are the piston to wall clearances? did you check the block for tapering?
also breaking in the rings with modern honing techniques is much much easier. on the blocks my friend's have built we've discussed break in and decided to BEAT on it for 15 miles (floor it onand off on ramps) and then drive easy for 400 miles. So far on all 3 blocks it has worked

yea i didnt realize someone had it already, im lookin for a new one. keep the replies coming please. thanks

Did you bleed the cooling system when u started it up?? An air bubble in the cooling system will definitelly give u a wierd idle, make u over heat and since u just put it together there is a big chance that could be it. I would look into that, also 3/4 hot for just a few mins dosn't cause waraping so dont be too worried about that. I have seen my brothers B16 over heat that way 3 times cuz the fan didin't come on and the motor never lost any compression or power. I would change the oil(the same oil as before but new) bleed the cooling system and go for a ride. Do some pulls and decelerate in gear.
Yeah, sounds like air in the coolant system! Bleed it and I bet you idle will smooth out, and that overheating issue will go away, sometimes rebuilt motors just smoke till the rings seal completely!
im not really concerned about the overheating(its from my fan not turning on), its more the rings not seeming to be seating at all. there was no smoke coming out of the breather when i started it then after i drove it it began to smoke out of the breather. maybe its just cause the oil warmed up and the vapors became visable after time....i dont know.
fix your overheating problem, weather it be your fan or the headgasket. put some more miles on that car with the correct break in and you will not smoke anymore. rings take a while to seat, and normaly have slight blow by till there fully seated.
what you dont want to do is let it idle, shut it off, the cars needs drivin with load to correctly seat the rings.
platinum.
