just changed the thermo in the gizzer. i pulled out the old one, it was waaay smaller than the one that shouldve been in there. i suppose it was a lower temp because ever since ive owned my car the temp gauges has never gone up past 1/4 mark. so i put the new one in, started it up and the idle jumped around for a bit. finally settled down and then i took it for a test drive. the gauge does read warmer than what im used to, probably about 3/8 the way up the gauge but once its there it doesnt move. i noticed that when i got home tho, the idle jumped a bit from 760ish down to 640 sometimes, then back up. it finally settled back down. im not sure what would cause this from me just installin a new tstat.
a. what do you think could cause the idle change?
b. is it ok where the temp guage is reading?

It sounds like your temp guage is reading where it should. The cause for the drop in idle is probably due to your cooling fan kicking on. If your thermostat was stuck open then the fan may have never come on before.

ok after driving it for a day, inoticed its idling much lower than what it was before. it stays right around 700-750(which i know is normal according to haynes) but when i pulled into work today, it dipped down real low to about 490 rpms and stayed running. why is it idling so much lower?
i called honda and they told me to bleed air out of the sytem, but on the 96's they dont have teh bleeder valve like the 94-95s

i was just going to suggest bleeding it..you dont need to use the bleeder valve to bleed. open the radiator cap..let it get to operating temp..let it overflow and keep filling the radiator with fluid and repeating until it just flows steadily. sounds like there is an air pocket somewhere.
i did this on my DA when i did my water pump and the idle was jumping up and down and the temp gauge was going nuts.
hope this helps!
