Tired of looking for 13x7's and 14x7's, read this!
SCCA Members, be part of this initiative:
Because 14x7's and 13x7's (even heavy ones) are becoming harder to find and more expensive, because final drive is open anyway, because running 16's and 17's on underpowered cars isn't a competitive advantage (just looks cool), because it cars to move from ITA to ITB without a wheel sale, because it will enable Spec Miata guys to run in ITA (great for 2 driver cars), because lightweight 15's are a dime a dozen (well actually $400/4)...
Who would support a change to allow IT cars to use any diameter wheel, as long as it was 7" wide or less?
Who cares enough that they would write a letter or email to the CB? Here's their email address:
compboard@scca.com

I care...
Someone should write a formal letter addressing the issue and then we can all forward the letter to the comp board.

It's funny, but true. You can buy 12-13 pound 15" wheels cheaper than the same weight in a 13", and tire cost isn't that different.
For those building a car right now this could be OK, but for someone like me it wouldn't help much.
Before I spend $900 on a couple of sets of 15" wheels and $1000ish on another final drive I'd just buy a couple of sets of 13" panasports or Volks.
Its not that the 13s and 14s aren't out there. Its that they are kind of expensive.
Oh and this has been tried a couple of times already and failed. Not telling you not to try, just letting you know whats up.

It will also be more productive if each concerned citizen writes his/her own letter. Be clear about the change you would like to see and be explicit about why you think it is a good idea.

That's right Kirk. I've already sent a letter. An email works just as well. They're not looking to see who can write the prettiest letter - just to see that there are enough people who actually care enough to contact them about it.
For the record: For my 87 MR2 I don't believe there are any new wheels I can buy in 14x7. Panasport had told me that there is a fitment issue with the brakes on my car.
Also, I know there have been other defeated proposals, but if lots of us insist that is different. Also, I think in the past the reasons have been: Tires aren't available (btw they are -maybe just not for that long) and 15"s are allowed in production (so what?). I think the lack of available wheels may be a better argument.

It may be a better argument than the ones already provided, but it is unlikely to be heeded, as parts availabilty is (and never has been) a determinant in the rules. If parts are not available for a car, you are SOL and should buy a new car. (that's not my personal opinion, but one the rules makers have made obvious in past requests).
You would have to be very careful about how you word the proposal and what benefit you think it will have to the class.

Call Diamond or Circle with spacing requirements and they will gladly build you a set.

Diamond and Circle - that's true I do have those options.
Circle = $1000 for a set of 4 wheels.
Diamonds are cheaper but around 18lbs with the FWD center.
The CB may have taken the "tough buy another car" approach before. But this is a case that effects a lot of vehicles in Club Racing's most popular classes. It's worth a shot.

So best thing to do is run you honda with Honda Challenge any Size rim may be used as long as its 7" wide for H2-h5. HC rules are great. And H1 may run any size they want which is great too. NASA has it goin for all the HC racers. GOOD JOB.

Just to point out that if IT cars are allowed to use any diameter wheels, there *will* be people who will choose to run the smallest and expensive custom size wheels they can find/build to get at least some competitive advantage. If the intent of this proposal is to help the class by reducing costs, I think this issue would need to be addressed in order to make this proposal possibly even more effective. Good luck!

Along with what Alex points out, I think you'd need to do a cost analysis of what impact it would have on trackside tire support to carry a much broader range of tires with them or more importantly, if they would. I know that I am very happy that on any given weekend, I can walk up to the App Tire guys (race-tire vendor) and pick up 2 new Hoosiers and often can get Toyos as well without reserving them. That's a nice feature. It would be a shame if that were to go away under the guise of more wheel options for IT. It would also be a shame if tire costs went up as well because of the added variants. Also, in the end, I am not sure that this is such a grand problem. I have run (as do many folks) 14x6s and have found them readily availible (used). That I choose now to try source some new 14x7s (which I know will cost me significantly more than my used 6" wheels cost me) is just that, a choice. I strongly suspect it will not have any dramatic effect on either my, the tire's or the car's performance.
