Default How do I tell what manufacturer of front brake calipers I have?

Some pads call for a Nissin(?) caliper or some call for an Akebono(?) caliper, well, is there any easy way to tell? Would the VIN # tell me which? Is there a site you can go to which you input the VIN # and it spits everything about your particular car?

Nope, no VIN # lookup that I know of.
This seems to be right (http://www.automotiveforums.co....html), except for the part about AutoZone knowing, because they gave me the Akebono ones the first time.

Mine's a 90 2dr, and has Nissin; my mother-in-law has a 92 4dr, and it's akebono. Try the dealer parts dept., or look for the "Nissin" logo on the front of your caliper w/ a wheel off.

I hope you weren't implying I've "got problems."

True, the dealer pads are worth the money. But when you're over an hour fom the nearest dealership, and the car has 248k miles on it, you tend not to go above and beyond. I've never had a problem with non-OEM pads if the brake job is done thoroughly and correctly (i.e., rotors turned, new pads and shims, calipers verified operating properly), the pads will last. It's half-a$$ing it (like most autozone shoppers do) that gets you in trouble. I get the OEM pads when I can, only because they include new shims. Other than that, I can't tell the difference when braking.

Atuzone pads are fine. They stop the car don't they? Tell me what the OEM calipers are doing that others aren't? If you are going to say fade resistance less tear on the rotor, ok. Some of us don't drive hard enough to care. BTW: I don't use Autozone pads.

autozone pads are made of clay and camel dung
for most normal drivers they are fine but anay spirited driving and i would not use them...i also never turn my rotors since i dont want them getting any thinner.

for daily driving i like AEM since they are Nissin pads, dust less than Axxis and last longer than stock (so far for me). To em they are the next step up from stock.
I have run axxis as well and like them too but they wear the rotors a lot faster.
