Default Bringing back a 96 Si.

Thanks to the Road Gods I found this forum !! I am in the beginning stages of bringing back a beautiful white 96 Si from the brink of destruction. In the process of doing that I will need your help so bear with me on the stupid questions.

This will be a pretty basic restoration. The suspension has been lowered by someone with more tools than smarts and that's where I plan to start.

Next will be a complete diagnostics of the engine. I don't see any obivious mods there but if the suspension is any indication it could very well have John Deere pistons in it !!

Have a Chiltons book which is of very marginal help and on the lookout for a real shop manual. helminc.com doesn't have one, will watch eBay.

Anyway, thanks for a great forum.

I know, was somewhat surprised. Will give it another look. Spent the afternoon removing an old Avital alarm thingy from under the dash. What a rats nest !! Bare naked wires, twisted connections without old sticky electricians tape ! The car still starts and everything seems to work so I guess I cut the right wires.

Having a problem tracing down the speaker wires for the front and may have to bite the bullet and rewire those.

Reefer already looks happier. You do name your vehicles don't you? hehe

Hmmmm, kind of curious...did you buy this car as a project car??

Did you buy it off some kid??

What are your plans for it???

Good luck with it.

Project car ? Yeah, I guess you could call it that. Actually we traded a 97 Sebring convertable with 110K on it for this 96 Si with 68K from a Ford dealer.

The car has been lowered, with a cutting torch I fear, and a set of chrome rims that are worth about half what the car is !

I want to bring it back to factory specs on the suspension, tweak the motor a bit, a bit more open exhaust, nothing really drastic. Have a set of alloy wheels coming, 15 x 6.5 Honda.

The motor seems sound and doesn't seem to use oil. I figure it was owned by some kid who had more tools than talent.

Hopefully by January one of our girls can drive it to school.

This list and its archives have been of great help already.

You have to get the helms book for the 95 and add the 96 supplement.

Bought a set off eBay but I may post these in the FS section soon. Car is going to the suspension shop tomorrow so their guy can give it a look-see.

Yeah, I was about to say... if you really wanted some stock coils I could try and see if my ex would let me be in her presence long enough to grab my old ones from her garage.

They'd be free of course... you just pay for shipping...

Well, I take that back. I'd charge you $9 for the half case of beer I'd need after dealing with the ex. Hahaha....

But other than that, just let me know if you need some stock coils, I'll try to track my old stock ones down.

I love to see someone doing what you're doing. Restoring a Prelude back from rice..... ahhh... it's great stuff.

Like the other guy said, buy the 1995 Prelude Shop Manual from helms, and only buy the 96 Supplement guide for OBDII fuel/emissions sensors and other minor stuff.

I have a 96 VTEC and the 95 manual covers 98% of what I need to know.

and the other 2% is just how to get pesky codes to go away. LOL

Somewhere back in the archives I ran across a post that listed a web address that has manuals for various Honda models posted. http://icelord.net/honda/repair/

It says "over 3.2 gb of honda manuals online for free".

I downloaded to a CD tons of stuff on the 96 Prelude, actually the Gen IV models but there are manuals there for Accords and Civics and Del Sols and bunches of stuff. It appears the manuals are from Mitchells (?). Anyway, it looked like good stuff. The pages I downloaded are in PDF format and print off plain as day.

You guys know that there is a right way and a wrong way to do anything mechanical and while I am in no way against modifying anything to fit what you want it to do it just drives me nuts to see something as fine as a car or motorcycle that is butchered in the modification process. Hell's bell's if you don't have the time, money or skills to do the job right why in the hell screw it up trying to do it the wrong way to begin with ??? (Rant mode off)

My son in law owns a custom Harley paint and body shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has had stuff in Easy Rider magazine and knows a bunch of guys in the custom car circles there. He is making arrangements for a couple of these shops to look at the car and give me estimates on the suspension and some resonable looks and performance mods. Maybe we can even keep the Z Racing rims and Toyo tires that are on it. We'll see. And to think I said he would never amount to a hill of beans !! hehe. How do I post pics of ole Reefer ?
