Default B16 race reliability: OBD0 or OBD1?

Hi all, I just bought a B16A-powered 1991 CRX Si. I bought this to take out the engine ans the new Konis for my race car, a 1988 Civic hatch. I plan to put my D16Z6 and KYB shocks in the CRX and resell it (for street use). MY D16Z6 has a chipped P28 ECU and is OBD1.

I talked to a fellow racer who told me something that seems important: the OBD0 distributor is less reliable than the OBD1 version and it is a JDM only part. Is this correct? Should I rechip the OBD1 ECU with a B-series VTEC program and and use it on the B16, then rechip the OBD0 ECU and use it on the D16 in the CRX (must lower the redline which is at 8200 rpm), or just use the ECUs the way they are now, since both cars run well? I will need to rechip the OBD0 ECU in any event, to remove the 120 mph speed limiter. I basically want the best setup for reliability, as I plan to continue to run enduros with the car. Also, there is a question of oxygen sensor locations. Will the sensor be in the right spot for OBD1 on the B16? Since this is a double swap, I have to make the decision now. Thanks for any advice.

OBD-0 B16s are reliable, you should talk to Hunter on here. He runs a bone stock OBD-0 B16A, he changed the cap and rotor in his dizzy when he did the swap. He has had no problems at all with it, and thats shifting at 8200. The engine comes with an oil cooler stock, like B18C5s. You can get replacement distributor parts, like the coil and ignitor here. I'm pretty sure B18A1 dizzy parts are the same.

If you know someone with a chip burner and datalogging software, converting to OBD-1 might be worthwhile to you. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it. You'd have to change oxygen sensors, get an OBD-1 distributor, and change fuel injectors. I'd stick with what you have, I haven't heard of anyone having problems on track with OBD-0 B16As

You don't have to change fuel injectors when converting to OBDI. Just keep the old fuel injectors and keep the injector resistor box.

I've been running the same B16 for about 2 years now, autocrossing and drag racing. I've been to the strip at least 40 times and about 10 autocrosses. I also drive it daily and have logged about 60k km's. The only thing I've really broken is a bunch of CV joints (camber ) and a couple of alternators (crappy rebuilds). Oh, and I toasted a water pump once from running straight water for 4 months with no antifreeze or water wetter.

The distrib *is* an older part and thus will be less reliable. And yes, it's JDM-only, but you can use Integra LS internals (OBD0) and swap them to the OBD0 B16 casing as a replacement (the distrib has different mounting posts on the LS, so you can use it, but it takes some fabbing).

The O2 sensor is probably in a different spot, I couldn't say. I'm converting to OBDI next week though, with a chipped P28 running Uberdata. Check the thread in the F/I forum - it's 30 pages long but it has tons of good info. You can remove your own speed limiter if you chip it yourself (the thread tells you how).

Rebuild the distributor, the bearing are available from any good bearing reseller.

I ran a 12 hour enduro with the OBD-I B16. The only problems I ran into were an alternator belt, and some minor timing issues.

RJ was the crew chief that weekend. So I 'll pass the blame onto him.
