Default Daily driver? What to get....

Well it looks like I might possibly(don't want to jinx it) be getting a nice job here shortly and I plan on immediately getting another car. The R has enough miles as is (81,000mi on a 2001 ) and I would like to have an extra car for when I work on it, which might be soon considering I think the tranny input shaft bearing is going bye bye .

I want something that is still fun too drive, but that I won't be tempted to mod THAT much. I've already given in to the fact that any car I have will be modified, but I want to keep the focus on the R. Here is what I've been thinking about. Each car will recieve 120mi per day minimum, the job is quite a trip from my house.

1. 2nd gen Integra (92-93 for hyrdo tranny reasons). I've always thought they were cool and quick enough for a daily driver. No theft worries. The least likely to modify considering its another Integra and I already have a pretty good one . Would be the nicest daily driver as well.

2. EG hatch. Really good gas mileage, but I'll be more tempted to mod, which is good and bad especially considering everything I take off of the R can go directly on it which will make modifying it cheaper in some regards.

3. EF hatch. Cheapest and oldest of the bunch, but I really don't like cable trannies and reliability will be more of an issue. Would probably only get one if the price is right.

Mods feel free to move if it's too much off topic, although I did say R several times

If Im not mistaken, all 2nd generation Integras have cable.

If I was in your shoes, get the EG. Parts are easier to come by, learn to control yourself in modding it. Good luck.

ive been thinkng of getting a daily driver recently also,i kinda dont want another Honda for the reason you mentioned dont want to start modding it but i have seen clean CRX's with b16 swaps in them that seems like it would be cool to drive to school ect..Ive been thinking of mabe a jeep wrangler or somthing truck\SUV because im always tired of asking favors of friends with trucks when i need one.

as for your choices id say get the older integra

U don't want something u have to worry about and waste money modifying it. I bought a Japanese housewife special of 6yrs old Toyota Tercel with 3k miles. I can go to NYC without care a thing parking on the street and lot plus let it snow! R safe and kept in a garage to hybernate!

I love my EG. automatic tranny(good for sitting in traffic), good gas mileage(over 350/tank), and I could always swap in a different motor later on if I want a little more "go"

Well you could allway go with a mid 90's Olds 88, they are great in snow and bad weather, seat 5 maybe six..., and they have plenty of pep to get around with.

AND nobody would want to steal it.

I have one for the days I don't take the R.

This is one of the main reasons I plan on sticking with a Honda. They are reliable and I already know my way around them.

Any automatic car is off my list period and I still want something with spunk to drive. A truck would be nice except for the fact that I hate driving them and they get terrible gas mileage. My daily driver has a very good chance of getting some autocross action as well.

My friend has an EG hatch with a stock B18B swap and I absolutely love it. Super easy to drive, great gas mileage, and pulled a 14.8 at the track. If I got an EG I would be really tempted to do a basic swap such as this, because a stock EG isn't exactly the most powerful thing in the world. The Teg isn't fast either but I drove one and was very surprised. Plenty of power for semi-spirited driving.

Funny you mentioned that. My grandmother use to have one and when I was around 13-14 yrs old I use to gun it down our dirt rode and just rip it into a slide out in the field. My stepdad would get on to me when he saw the grass ripped up thinking I had be driving the truck and was being jerky with the clutch, I of course agreed. My mom on the other hand walked out one day and said to me "have you been coming down here and sliding with your mawmaw's car?". "Yes mam" I replied. Her response: "yeah I figured, I use to do the same thing"

It had that really long speedometer that streched seemingly from one end of the dash to the other and only read 85mph. If you just looked at the speedo the car almost seemed quick because the needle was moving so fast. It would be buried by the time you hit third gear, ah memories

I've had 2 90 Integras before I got the R and would never get one again. They were fairly cheap which is why I bought them, but are easily broken into. One day I took off the door pannel and looked at the lock assembly. I messed around with a coathanger for a few min and found out how easy it is to pop the lock open in it than a DC2. The front windows can also be pryed open a few inches with your bare fingers because of the crappy weatherstripping.

My daily driver now is a 94 LS. I know how to work on it and have tons of access to parts. Its not as fast as the R, but not as slow as a Civic. I still get on average 29.5 MPG in it because I never have the temptation to shift after VTEC since it doesn't have it .

I vote EF hatch. Get an 88-89 base if you can. 88 base is the lightest - and you can always do a bseries swap later if you want to make her a track ***** (ask me how I know..... )

They get insane gas mileage stock. My favorite hatchback body style (aside from the dc2), and they are totally sleeper.

Now that I think about it theft really isn't an issue. My new job (if I get it) is with da FBI yo! How were your 90 tegs in terms of reliability?

Wow you would be putting 120 miles per day minimum on these cars? Must be one hell of a good job for a big commute like that. Anyway my picks would be an old 4th gen prelude or EK hatch.

My only problems on both of them were the distributor likes to go out(easy to fix problem), windows shake and leak easy, and they seemed too easy to steal if someone wanted to.

geez.

Anyway, EG does its job for me. Granted, it could use a little more power. But its nice to have a car that you dont care about getting dented, scratched, dirty etc.
Lately, Ive been getting 35-38 MPG, with little conservative driving.

When I bought it, I thought it was going to turn into a money pit like the R, but I dont have any desire to mod. Although I wouldnt mind to have a B18b so I dont have trouble making it up hills.

I dont think you can go wrong with an EG.

My vote goes to the EG. An EF would be nice. Inexpensive, gives good mileage...BUT it's a good 15+ year old car. Rusted/Corroded parts are very common on a car that old.

And like you have already mentioned, you can put your stock ITR parts into an EG. That means extra $$$ saving.

My advice: Forget fun to drive.

Get an early '80s Mercedes 300D turbo. 30+ mpg, comfortable for four people, extremely reliable and built like a bank vault.

If you dont mind another car payment you could always lease an 03 or 04 Civic SI. They are very reliable and you could still have a good time driving it. A friend of mine is leasing one for I think 160 a month, now I know you would have to extend the mileage clause but for probobly under 200 bucks you could have a great, fun to drive beater thats not soo bad on the eyes with a warranty.

Least expensive and good gas mileage = '92-'92 Civic VX (ok, sometimes EGR valve goes bad, but if you don't have to emission it every year who cares.) VX got me good 47mpg while I owned it and put 10k miles. And, I stomped on the gas too.

My other vote goes to '94+ Integra LS or RS. (even gs-R). But, they are a bit more to insure.

Lastly, DA integras and CRXs are pretty good too.
