Default Little OT: Motorcycle HPDE and where to look for used race bike?

I have a friend into sport bikes and he was asking me about HPDEs for bikes in the southeast. I know they are run at Road Atlanta, Roebling, TGP, abd Barber but I have not been able to find info online.

Any1 know which orgs put these events on? At Road Atlanta you can rent a bike to use for the weekend. Is that common at other tracks as well?

Also need to find any sites similar to this forum for amateur bike racing and places to find used race bikes for sale.

Thanks in advance.

my step brother has been racing for several years in the CMRA (Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association). Obviously, that doesn't help you much.
I found the MMARC for the Northern VA area, and they have this page of links:
http://marrc.nova.org/html_docs/links.html

You can also google "motorcycle roadracing" and sift through that.

I was not aware of any HPDEs per se, when my brother got his license, it was a weekend school, then 2 races without crashing, and he had a license. Similar to the SCCA model, really.

I would like to warn your friend, though. Roadracing bikes, even with the right equipment is quite physical, and dangerous. My brother has several pins in one shoulder, and had one of his knees reconstructed once. And he his an amateur racer - he has given up sprints and does mostly enduros these days.
Even if you don't crash yourself, it is very easy for some one else to wipe out in front of you, and off you go! I've seen it. Often.
I rode bikes for many years (from motocross to sports bikes), but I honestly never had the cojones to actually road race them. I realized my own mortality to soon, I guess.

hth.

i have seen schools run on the Jefferson Circuit. Watched one dude bite it and almost hit a jersey wall from the Turn 3 worker bucket on the big track, the course was running clockwise.

Zsolt,
Get in touch with Ivan. He used to race sport bikes in the SE so I'm sure he'll know.
I don't have his email. Sorry.

On the "I'm nucking futs" scale, bike racers are just behind rally drivers.

Warren - adding value every step of the way.

You have that backwards. Bike racers are one step more nuts than rally drivers. Esp. when they run Summit Point (either track) without an air wall.

You're some what less likely to be seriously injured on a bike that tops out at 55 down the front strait, rather than 155...

have you ever ridden one of those? I have, and as short of a wheelbase as they have, you can get high-sided in an eye-blink. And that's how you disclocate shoulders, break ribs, and other unpleasantness...

I am currently considering getting my motorcycle license and looking for something similar. I want to race around a track without building and possibly wrecking my own vehicle. My mother works for the AMA, so I have a pretty good inside track, but I'll be getting into it next summer, since I have a disapproving girlfriend no longer.

I don't want to lose the ability the walk, however, so I won't be road-racing. HPDE is as far as I'll take it (hopefully I'll have the good sense to do so)...oh yeah and wheelies at 150mph through neighborhoods.

Yes.

I did say 'some what.' And by serious I meant things more scary than dislocated shoulders.

You can die in a 30mph crash, and you can come out of a 130mph crash scratchless... but if I have a choice in the matter, you know which one I'm going with.

I say go on ebay and buy a salvage bike! Most of the time they have been layed down once and insurance has totalled them for damaged bodywork... Def the way to go!

The Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School (www.schwantzschool.com) at Road Atlanta is excellent from what my Road Racing friends say. You can rent the bikes and equipment. It ain’t cheap, but with the group of instructors they have, some of the best bang for the buck! May be a little much for a first time track experience but I know they do take newbies. I have also heard not so great things about the California Superbike School but have no first hand experience.

Good websites:
http://www.amasuperbike.com – go to their classified section for used bikes
http://www.roadracingworld.com – go to their school and organizations link pages

I agree that bike racers and rally drivers are both "touched" in that fawkin' nuts kind of way. I actually put them on par with each other, giving them each equal attribution for being whacked -- one does it on two wheels, the other on four. They're both winners in my book.

Casey, who apologizes to Zsolt for the continued bastardization of his worthy thread...

Check out "TeamProMotion.com" they are a good school to ride with, or the Ed Bargy Race school. THese two are among the most popular on the southeast and affordable.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but theres some good info and good links at this URL. The page is called "How to become a motorcycle roadracer" but there is a lot information on schools and edjucation. And the author really lets you know what you're in for...

I think there is a place called Jennings GP in S. Georgia, I've heard it's a great bike only track w/ schools every weekend....

Good link. I like this...

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">1.4 Am I Going To Wind Up Maimed or Dead?
Well, all the championship level racers are maimed to a certain extent. Doug Polen has no toes on one foot, Mick Doohan's right ankle doesn't bend, and Wayne Rainey is paralysed from the waist down. On the other hand, I've met a lot of expert club racers who seem pretty much okay.

You are going to crash, and you are going to break bones. Your collarbones are goners. Fingers, handbones, wristbones, footbones, and anklebones are also likely to get broken.</TD></TR></TABLE>
