Default ctr cam upgrades necessary?

i have the opportunity to obtain a ctr intake cam for a real good price. would it b worth it to buy an itr exhaust cam to match the upgraed cam or can i stick with the stock gsr exh cam. also while searching i came up with one thread that recommends valve train upgrade is this absoutley necessary to have i dont plan on going past redline.

i've seen a lot of people run the ctr intake cam with gs-r exhaust cam. obviously, a ctr/itr exhaust cam is going to make a difference. but is it necessary? i don't think so.

not worth it unless you get it for cheap. you can use stock valvetrain with stock redline.

I wouldn't. That riceball dude here or someone used his stock valvetrain and he cracked 2 retainers and dropped 2 valves.

recalling from his posts, he never took it past the intended redline on his motor.
Just get a valvetrain upgrade. It's cheap insurance.

there's a reason why honda upped the spec on both cams.
Your getting the ctr intake so an itr 00-01 spec. exhaust cam will go nicely.
the exhaust cams are the same or any year itr exhuast cams, but that will not optomize the Intake/exhaust cams.
Both were design to work in conjuction with each othr.

regarding valvetrain if they need to change or not.
Your stock valvetrain is suficent to run the cams, unless you plan to rev higher.

I happen to be one of those people using the CTR intake cam on my 94 GSR. When I dynoe'd my car...my mods at the time were aem short ram, skunk2 IM, CTR intake cam, dc 4-2-1 header, and greddy sp exhaust..on the stock ecu, i got 160whp..on my custom all motor chipped p28, i got 167 whp and 132lb's of torque. The first thing I realized was the intake getting louder at high rpms. It also pulls a little bit harder after vtec x's over. I'm still using the stock valve train, rev to 8400 not very often, bit I do/have. Car still runs great....even on my high mileage motor. I just recently bought the itr exhaust cam, but no time to put it in yet. PM me if you have any particular questions. sorry to babble on.......

yes i was the one who blew my b16.
the link above is my post of my blow motor
dont listen to anyone who says run ctr cams with stock valve train
i thouught it would be ok too and look what happen to me. the retainer broke and i droped 2 valves and the motor is compleatly gone. learn from my mistake and up grade your valve train with springs and ti retainers. and when my motor blew i swear to god that i was not reving it for anything. it was at about 4k on first gear when it blew. i was runing the cams for about half a year before it blew.
my b16 was stock besides bolt ons and ctr cams.
another thing is that i always babyed my car. i rarely ever took it to 8k. barely ever. and most of the time i always shifted at 3k. barely even sees vtec like once a day and it still blew

up grade valve train when up grading cams!!!!!!!

i hope this helps

Yeah, stock springs bind at CTR lift for sure. Best thing to do is get ITR/CTR springs or some portflow.

portflow inners, itr outers, stick with stock retainers because titaniums tend to crack more.

You can run CTR's safely with the stock valvetrain as I did for a couple of years but you really won't get the most out of them until you upgrade the valvetrain and up the revlimit
