Mugen twin loop catback... Get the JDM if you plan on getting a header/cat later on.

Stock...

I don't really believe in considerable power gains from aftermarket exhausts if you're not at least mildly modified. The stock ITR exhaust system is actually pretty well designed. If someone can prove to me that with just an aftermarket exhaust, you can make more than 5whp, on a stock ITR, I'll change my mind.

Droping the can will yield around 3 peak HP gains.

The stock ITR exhaust is the most inconsistent diameter'd system I have ever seen . If you measure it at different points it varies by almost and inch or more. Any nice true mandrel bent 2.5" system will give you +5 easy over stock.

You can verify this with Dave at SMSP, he has actually measured the stock itr.
FYI you may want to contact SMS, he sells a nice 2.5" system with a Magnaflow muffler. Its louder than stock but not annoying.

Do a search under SMS or SMSP to get his contact info if you're interested.

The Mugen is NOT quiet. It is mellow and doesn't sound like a coffee can at WOT, but it is definitely not quiet.

Comptech is one of the quietest besides the good ol Greddy PE.

Spoon Sports muffler look pretty much like stock except they are polished stainless. Spoon consider about streetable performance i.e. all around power. Dyno results show only a 3hp gains for the entire rpm ranges. So ppl who wants more ON/OFF throttle response then Spoon will be one of your option.

AJR (my company) is making prototype 65mm B-pipe and mufflers and we are under test fitting and performance. We found with the 2.5" exhaust , we notice there's a pretty good power starting from 6300rpm. Since the pipe size is way bigger then stock well, the low end suffers a bit.

I've read that the stock ITR exhaust does indeed have reduced diameter points, but what about the muffler itself? Would a nice mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust from the cat back, mated to the stock muffler work as well as an SMSP 2.5" exhaust? I'm curious because I really like the quietness of the stock exhaust and the looks of the stock tip. Just adds to the sleeper value.

Anyone have any experience with the Vision R muffler???? (looks kinda like the Spoon sports muffler) There's one on our R - car came from JDM land with it - looks like it goes down to less than 2" inside and has a huge tip, which pisses me off ( gonna hack it off one day and put something more reasonably sized on). On the plus side it has a nice sound and isn't loud.

Good Question Cheesefrog,

Thats something I've been thinking about for a little myself.

Does anyone know???

I too appreciate the OEM muffler but wonder if some custom mandrel bent 2.5" catback piping mated to my 2.5" HF cat would yield similar results as aftermarket setups?

I like the sound of stock and am only interested in gains...

A.

The muffler tubing measures just a tad under 2-1/8" OD and necks to 2" OD going into the muffler. I think 2 guys have cut off their stock tips and had them welded to the muffler in the systems I've sold. This makes for a very stock looking appearance.

I don't see the reason to build a 2-1/2" B pipe to bolt to the stock muffler. If any of you guys go with a 2-1/2" mandrel bent system or even a crush bent system ( these loose about 1/4"-5/16" in diameter in the bends) make sure that the B pipe inlet is at 2-1/2" ID so there isn't a ID mismatch with the outlet of your cat. Remember a 2-1/2" cat outlet is the ID measurement.
