Default CRX ZC Swap

I am new to the Honda world and was looking to buy a 89 CRX that has a ZC engice swap in it. What are these engines and is it a good swap to have in the car. Where did this engine come from(what type of car), and any other general info you can give me.

Thanks

The ZC comes from the JDM Civic, in which it came standard. It is a DOHC 1.6 L. I have seen published HP from 130-140 HP. Its performance is similar to that of the 88-91 Domestic Acura Integra DOHC 1.6L. It has, per most everybody who has a B series swap, limited potential. However i have benn using one in my '89 CRX and '88 HB and like its driveability. I go more for handling and a usable (daily driver) horsepower. THe Vtec motors have higher horsepower but who keeps the engine about 5K RPM to use it? It comes down to how much strainght line spped you want. The B series motors require an motor mount kit and will significantly increase transmitted vibration to the passenger compartment. I like them because the whole swap including an SI transmission was under $1K. It still gets between 28 (getting on it all the time) to 36 (highway miles under 75 MPH).

Youe mean the 86-89 tegs with the D16A1 the 90+ got the B18 which is not similar at all..
The ZC came in the jdm civic/crx Si's.
It makes around 130hp.

And yes it is a good swap but it has a slimmer/harder to find source of aftermarket parts

there are different types of ZC motors. theres the common DOHC ZC, SOHC ZC, and SOHC VTEC ZC. you'll need to clairfy which one your car has.

if you have a single cam zc swap, you have a stock crx si motor basically, they are physically identical....basically in everyway except some stamping.. if you have a dual cam, you have a JDM si motor...i have a dohc, and i LOVE it....good stuff. i have my head milled, better head gasket, exospeed stage 2 reground cams, and srr cam gears...with these mods it is a LOT of fun to drive.

Hey, red! I always wondered, why is a "better head gasket" actually better. I have a DOHC ZC as well.

Better head gasket is an MLS head gasket instead of the shitty composite ones they come with. When going with head gaskets stick with stock Honda OEM.

Also it weighs 100lbs less, too, that shrinks the Hp difference between them as ZC has less weight to pull, Plus the ZC has more low ent torgue than the B16. I myself get 35 mpg with my DOHC ZC W/ZC box CAI Header and 2.5 catback, and that baby does fly. And I am in the middle of installing Stage 2 Exospeed cams in mine.

i would pretty much swear by the cometic MLS headgasket i have....the shitty composite one i had was actually blown, but only slightly, i didnt notice much of a performance loss, i was loosing some coolant though. the cometic gasket is an excellent piece, fit REALLY perfect too. very happy with it....and i LOVE my exospeed cams.....top notch stuff

I have a DOHC ZC swap in my 90 hatch. I've had the engine in for about a year now, and I love it. I just have normal bolt-ons, and even with full interior and a sub box, it pulls hard. And for the price, you can't really beat it.

Water pump, front and rear seals are easy when the engine is out but much less fun when its in the engine bay!!!!

Timing belt and water pump should be replaced too, either of these failing do to unkown age or milage and it WILL ruin your day, week and month in mere seconds.
