bright lights/car dies
my friend has a 89civic cx hatch. he was on his way to work today and when he hit his bright lights his car would die, when he stopped the car and turn off the lights the car started right up with no problems,he would then turn on lights and turn on brights again and the car would die so as long as he didn't hit the brights it was running fine.could this be a relay or a fuse maybe? any info would help thanks

Have the battery and charging system checked first.

Sounds like your alternator /vlotage regulator was on its way out causing it to "blow". Having the belt too tight would not cause the alternator to "blow", unless the bearings were GROSSLY worn causing the armature to contact the windings.
PS: For the original poster : GO GET YOUR CHARGING SYSTEM CHECKED before it frys something like the ECU
Whatever you do don’t “check” the alternator by “pulling” off one of the battery cables while the car is running! I had one “customer” who did so; The ECU got marginally fried by the voltage spike. The car after that had all kinds of weird running problems.

Or the battery is BAD /has a weak, or SHORTED cell.
The guy needs to having the charging system checked ASAP. Charging system checks are FREE at AutoZone and such so why not run it down there?
