Default D16Y8 Question

I'm gonna buy a d16y8 next week, and it's from a 1999. Anyways, what should I look for when I go see and buy the engine? And also, If I get the 1999 ECU and wiring harness, do I still need to activate the vtec somehow?? I don't understand this part.

Y8 swap here....you'll want to get an OBD1 P28 ECU and do some rewiring. This way you don't have to worry about Vtec and you've got a great ECU to work with. If you can see in the combustion chamber check for signs of oil burning...

Any other questions let me know...i may be able to help you with a lot of the stuff i've spent a lot of time getting my Y8 crx running and right.

If at all possible, get the wiring harness. You're gonna' need the plugs for one of the water temp senders (on the thermostst housing) and the 2 Vtec hookups.

agent, have u made a walk through when u did this swap? i recently bought a y8 and i was told that it came out of a CRX so the wiring was already done, but it came out of a CRX Si and i have a CRX DX so i'm not sure what other wirings i'm gonna have to do. Only wiring i know is activating vtec and MPFI swap.

i actually got the crx with the swap in it but an unfinished wiring job...he left me with all the problems but i got it cheap so it was no biggie. MPFI swap and Vtec wiring should be it...you just need the obd for whatever ECU you are using and a harness for the engine i believe. for me it was a P28 ecu, obd1 harness and lots of time cutting and tracing wires.

And finally, should I go with the Y8 or ZC???? I seem to like the ZC for some reason, if i get one with good compression, should I get it? What will be better for the future, what will be better for performance? I heard I wont pass AirCare with the ZC!

You gotta think about the year difference. That Y8 is 4 years old, compared to a ZC that could be like 10-12 years old. To me D Series is D series. I would keep the Y8 becasue if you set it up for obd1 as opposed to obd0 (zc)it is better for tuning and what not..I could be wrong though

Well, a ZC would be a really good buy if you are going to rebuild it and go F/I. But if you are not planning to go F/I, the d16y8 is way better. Also, spark plugs are a good indicator of how the engine feels. Remove one and check if you see oil buring signs or prestone burning signs. I would, personnaly, go for the y8. But if you want an original setup with more power, ZC turbo is better

Have fun swapping, take your time and dont forget to get all the wiring diagrams for both your Si and the 6th gen Si.

hehe Y8 and then do what i'm planning...P29 pistons and 3 layer gasket will bring compression to 12.6:1 = serious D power. Throw a cam in and let's see what we can do This wont be till after X mas but i'm gettin excited!

Y8 due to more aftermarket support, you know the history of the Y8? I like the Y8 more, is that a good reason.

Im still thinking about it because the ZC seems easier to wire up, and if I find one with good compression it's a good idea. How can I check if the engine is burning oil?

why would the ZC be easier to wire up? Either way if you want a faster car you need obd1...and there is nothing more to wire up on the Y8. You just don't wire the sensors on the engine that dont have a place on the ECU. Y8 is a compression monster. Do some more research i think you'll like it...especially if you can get one easily.

Good Luck,
