Need engine help....Honda Newb
I had a quick question on the Honda Prelude (4th gen) engine. Here is my qualm
I just bought a 4th gen Prelude from the dealer...
It had VTEC floormats and a DOHC VTEC sticker on the back and it has DOHC VTEC on the valve cover, so I assumed it was the upper model Prelude
Well the carfax I got from the dealer said it was a Prelude S...I guess base model...H23??? My engine bay says 2259cc (which equates to 2.3L which would be the H23)
However it has a VTEC controller and you cant put VTEC controllers on the H23, at least according to the box
I am a newb and dont exactly know when the VTEC is "supposed" to be kicking in if at all. The V-AFC says something like 4800 (I forgot and I just checked it...LOL)
I checked the block and it says H23A1. Now that isnt a VTEC engine right.........
My question is can you bolt on H22 head on a H23 block.....if not....can the DOHC VTEC vavle cover fit on the H23 head??? Alos what is the fuel cut on teh H22 or H23...I am hitting fuel cut liek at 5500rpm or so......
Excuse the long post and my newbness. I am just came from the Nissan camp and we didnt have all these different engine types....

Upon further investigation I came across this......
http://www.mad-psi.com/conversion.html
It can be done and I have experienced some of the symptoms...
low redline
check engine light (about to check for codes right now)
and my oil light came dimmed and on and off a few times (no I wasnt stalling either)

The Prelude S came with a single overhead cam 2.2L F22... not the H23.
Sounds like someone tried to swap in an H23 and make an H23 VTEC or something... maybe they got rid of it cause it wasn't working right..
good luck!

Yes I have that white 96 from don bessette. Tell the guy to help me out man. We and a friend were just talking about talking to the original guy. I was liek **** man I got it from Bessette so how can I track down the last fool. The cvar is clean. Just want it to run right. I think the oil pressure is low. The RPM's sometime fluctuate from 1000 to 1300 and when it hits 1000, the oil light flashes on. How do I check the codes. I have the ECU pulled out (again I am a Nissan guy, we check the codes on teh ECU)
to check the codes, get down in your driver's side footwell, and look behind the behind the center column.. like behind where the cd player is ... (this is where it is on my 93 at least) you should see a little blue plug with a brown wire and blue wire going into it. Just take a paperclip or a piece of wire and stick each end in the plug, jumping the connection between the blue and brown wire. Now, turn your ignition to on, and the CEL will flash. Long flashes are 10, short are 1....

Umm if the oil light is flashing you have to ADD OIL. Oil light coming on is a sign of severe oil starvation.
You check the codes by sticking a paperclip into the blue clip behind the radio/center console by where your gas pedal foot wold sit get down there and reach around the plastic moulding a blue clip should be there. insert the parerclip and tuen the car to on...don't start...make sure the connection is complete and hte Check engine link will blink long and shot...count the longs and the shorts. if there are several they will follow in sequential order...and they will keep repeating.
Did it have codes when you bought it?
If not I'm think you let it run out of oil and overrevved it. It' sik96prelude's old car

You can make an H23 VTEC...I used to have one.
You're getting the fuel cut becuase you have engine codes.
What is the ecu code on the sticker? P13?

DUDE I am not that much of a newb. I DID have a 240 with RB20DET swap. I checked the oil...that is the FIRST thing I did. It was good. It is solved now. The original owner couldnt figure it out, so I know I wont be able to.

well good for you, I can only comment based on the information you provide. Snd besides preludes burn oil..and even smart people find themselves screwed by a motor that burns oil and they don't keep it topped up.
so these problems were already there when you bought it?

Yup....and I never knew it. It is snowy/icey here, so i didnt want to slide around trying to test drive it and rev it out. I took it maybe to 4K RPM on the test drive... PLUS the clutch was soooo different from my Nissan, that I was stalling out. I guess the other guy saw me and said it made him sad that I was ******* his old **** up....couldnt help it. My clutch was WAAAAAY Different. It wasnt throwing codes until I drove it home. And on the way home, i wanted to just rip into it. so I floored it on the "freeway" and BAMMMMMMMM Rev limit hit me like a iron wall. SO I was like WTF...maybe 5500 is the limit
I knew it wasnt but just benefit of the doubt. SO I am going to see if the dealer will take it back since it isnt the original engine and I wasnt informed about it before I bought it.........

well honestly RWD did nothing for me PLUS I was having problems with my RB swap...hence me selling it to get what I thought was a reliable Prelude.....LOL one problem to another. Besides I thought 240's were played out and overrated. ANd after all the trouble I went thorugh to swap my engines, it wasnt worth it. So I was like well I will get a nice daily driver for now and maybe turbo it later.....
