Default Drivers side door lock that has to be locked using the key?

My 92 accord doesn't let you lock the drivers door from the inside when the door is open, you have to lock it from the outside with the key. It's just that I am so lazy and having to lock it with the key everytime is a drag when I could just hit a switch from inside. Is this a feature that ensures you never lock your keys in the car or is my lock assembly broke?

its easier to hold the outside door handle and lock the door simultaneously, but again, whichever floats ya boat...you know
