engine life with hard driving
I have been searching for about an hour and haven't found a really good answer, so forgive me if this is somewhat of a noobish-sounding post, but here goes.
Just wondering how much abuse a stock-internalled sohc can take--I'm looking for personal experience--how hard to you guys beat on your engines, and how long are they lasting.
I don't take mine all the way to redline all the time, but I do hit vtec a lot.
Just curious--

Keep up on maintenance religiously, and don't overrev it. The engine should last a good while as long as it's cared for.
Now, the transmission is a different story . . .

I beat the SNOT out of both... tranny and engine... I run it damn near redline just about through every gear...
I've got 168k on mine and it had ALL sorts of issues in the middle... but I addressed them and it still runs strong and fine..
the tranny was grinding for a couple of months due to me using mobil 1 oil in there
that was fixed in a couple of months by swithcing to redline MTL... it doesn't grind at all anymore...
the engine was pinging for well over 6months... and I did a couple things to get rid of that... but it's fine now and runs just as hard as it ever did...
They take a pretty serious beating imo.

Oh it's a d16z6 manual tranny

its all about maitence. change your oil every 3000 on the dot with a synthetic. make sure you follow the rest of the schedule religiously as well. ive seen people on this board with close to 200k of sheer beating on their engines - not without problems of course (fixable ones).

I have a d16y8 and I beat the living **** out of it ... I have hit rev limiter alot with it and it is still strong. Only once have I actually had a problem with it and the problem was the tranny. I kept downshifting into first and it bent my shift fork and I ended up with a whole internal hell in the tranny so I got a new one and stopped that downshifting. I have 120k on the ticker and she is still holding strong. Just make sure you keep checking the oil because it will burn alot of it and keep up with fluid changes and spark plugs and she will hold strong.
i dont drive mine as hard n e more cause now my tranny is going. but my motor is in great shape. i put castrol syntec and have been running that for a while. i always change my oil on time and spark plugs. motor can take it but the tranny is a bit weaker. but they're not that much to replace.
I've got 100k on my y8 and she still runs strong. I don't abuse it, but I do have my fun with it. I have done regular oil changes and tune ups along the way and it still runs great. I changed the O2 sensor this morning. That was the first trouble that I have ever had from the car in 6yrs.
As long as you maintain the car and don't abuse it, it should last quite a while.

I beat the unholy **** out of my d16z6 and it's got 240k+ miles on it. The tranny grinds a little in 2nd and 3rd, but it runs like a champ.
