tranny fluid... Motor Oil VS. MTF
called up dealer. they said 10w30 motor oil. is that same as MTF ? i use it in my 91 LS but what are the differences in MTF and motor oil? do they just pour the motor oil into the MTF bottles?
Not sure on that one. My friend had the same problem when a shop worked on his tranny...didn't know if having them use lightweight motor oil was bad. One reference I found said that there is a significant difference between motor oil and tranny fluid and motor oil can only substitute tranny fluid for a short amount of time before premature wear inside the tranny occurs. Dunno if that helped or made things worse, lol.

No, Honda MTF works better. The MTF is tested in Honda trans, and is designed to work properly in your trans (ie. smooth engagement, and works long term.)
MTF has addatives specifically for your trans that motor oil doesn't have.

The honda MTF is designed with the proper amount of friction to engage the synchros a little smoother than motor oil. You will have no ill effects with motor oil in your tranny.

Even my '95 owner's manual calls for engine oil, so I guess they didn't start making MTF until after that. There IS a difference, because you can smell the EP additives. When I switched to MTF it was better, but not a tremendous difference.
