Mice ate my car...lovely. What's this part they chewed up?
Checked out under the hood of my CRX today, and apparently, mice have been living under my car since the San Diego fires. Great.
Under the hood, they chewed up the hood insulation (big deal) and made a nest on top of the fuel filter and right by the charcoal canister/PCV thing on the firewall (that's what that is, right?). They brought a bunch of leaves and berries into the engine bay and left poop all over the intake runners, next to the battery, by the suspension...****, there must have been a whole damn family of them in there!
They also chewed the red rubber hose that comes from the charcoal canister and connects to the firewall. Do I need this for anything in particular? The car runs fine even with the red rubber hose chewed to ****, but I'm still wondering exactly what it's for. If anybody knows, please help me out!
Thanks.
Alex

quick suggestion.
start the car, put it in third and run it at redline for 30 minutes, enjoy crisp, fried rodent snack.

the red hose is from the evaporative canister, carrying collected fuel fumes to the IM to be brunt off, needed if you want to pass smog inspection.

that hose is some kind of evaporative emisson's control.. not sure what it does or how it works but i think u might just experenice bad gas milage without it.. just goto ur local parts store and get a replacement.

No, there's another line that goes from said canister to the IM, that one is fine. This one goes into the firewall. Something for vacuum purposes or...something else? I am planning on replacing it, and putting mothballs under my car from now on, little *******
I'mma smash all you mouses in the face with a hammer!!!

The red line goes from the throttle body to the charcol canister. The other line goes to the purge solenoid valve on the firewall. There is a service manual with the vacuum routing diagrams

Here's what I understand it to be. Your gas tank needs to have a hole in it to prevent pressure build up, but the feds were understandably worried about gasoline fumes drifting off into the air. Solution? Run a fuel line from the top of the tank to the air intake. That way evaporated gas will mix into the engine and be burnt off. But what if a whole shitload of gas finds its way into the that hose? The intake would be flooded with liquid gas, and all sorts of **** would break. Enter the charcoal canister. It's there basically for overflow protection. If a whole bunch of gas goes through that tube, it'll get caught in the charcoal and slowly evaporate up into the vacuum line that runs into the intake.
So to answer your question, that red hose connects to a fuel line that runs to your gas tank. You don't need it, and won't notice any ill effects from it being there, but you'll probably want to replace it eventually so you don't kill trees.
