help on water pump
I'm tryin to take out my water pump right now. I have a SOHC ZC (should be similar to the stock crx si motors.). The water pump just went out on me and I need help taking out the pump. I've taken out the upper cover and I'm having trouble taking out the lower cover. The crankshaft pulley is giving me a lot of problems and I was wondering if there was another way of taking out the lower cover so I can get to the water pump. All help is appreciated!
THIS WAY IS NOT RECOMMENDED USE AS A LAST RESORT
i did this on my beater just to see if it would work not on my real car.
after you get everything you can unbolted from the timing belt side of the engine u gotta start hacking. cut the timing belt off (you need a new one anyway) then get a torch and melt away the area of the lower timing cover where the mount bolts to the block after you get enough of the cover out of the way unbolt the whole mount and support the engine with a jack. next get a torch and melt away some key areas of the timing belt cover. one is under the crank pulley. next between the timing belt tensioner and the water pump is a step type thing that you gotta mutalate to pull the timing cover off. take plenty of breaks to let your garage clear of the smoke and do yourself a favor and pull the rubber gasket from between the block and the cover.

you need to take the crank pulley off and the timing belt, i know there is probably a possible way to do it w/o, but its not worth the trouble, the problem with the above mentioned way is cutting the timing belt (he did say last resort), you can't put the new timing belt on w/o taking the pulley off, i would recommend just taking everything off the right way.
Get the proper tools and remove the crank pully. If you can't do that then you shouldn't be working on your car to begin with. Doing it any other way than the right way (hack job) is just plain stupid IMO, and your going to be asking for trouble.
Like it was already posted you have to take off the crank pulley to take off the lower cover. You will need it off anyway to repalce the water pump since you have take off the timing belt to replace it also. If you dont have one I recommend getting a manual for your car cause it will give you all the instructions you need to replace your water pump which is basically like changing your timing belt except you have to R&R the water pump.

i agree that there are other possible ways but the crank pulley does NOT need to come off to put on the timing belt. just to take off the timing belt cover. which was melted off in my case

When i turn on the car, coolant starts coming out from the crank shaft area. I'm pretty sure its the water pump. So would it be easier if I had a impact gun or some sort of tool to get off the crank shaft pulley?

The impact gun will work, but it needs to be a good one with lots of torque. Most cheap guns won't budge it. Usually people take it to a shop and get them to loosen it. Its easier to get a big breakerbar and have somone lockup the flywheel with a big flathead. You can also get a big *** chain wrench to hold the pully, but thoes are pretty expensive.
Spaceman: Not much its pretty slow over there. I don't know if you've seen it but I have a good thread going in the lounge area. Might want to check it out.
