Default code 17 VSS

my spedo worked just fine on sunday before my engine went south. fast fwd to today. once we got everything working right i noticed my spedo doesnt work. then the ecu throws a code for it (17). my guess is i dont have it in the trans correctly or something. is there a special way the unit with the gear goes into the trans? is there a special way the cable goes into that unit?

There is a clip that holds the cable in the tranny without it the cable can bounce up and not engage....is a small clip and its easy to loose.

If you can find a diagram of the tranny or speedo cable you should see it on there.

stil no workie. it used to work w/o the clip too, so i dont thing my problem stems from there. and since its cable driven, there is very little to go bad. everything on the trans end seems to be ok. im gonna try my spedo gear from my old 4speed. if that doesnt work ill take a look at the back of the cluster. maybe durring the swap we may have pulled it out of the cluster.

-spenc..........just wants to see if he can hit 100 @lrp on monday

pulled it out of the cluster allright. pulled it out of the metal fitting too. took some doing to get the cable housing back into the metal fitting but all is well.

That's what happened on mine..but it was like that when I bought it. The internal piece that rotates was pushed flush with the outer "sheath" and didn't engage the gear inside the tach/speedo. Also the metal collar fitting at the end (the end that goes inside the trans) was pulled off.....therefore pulling the internal piece. I pushed it back on as far as it would go and crimped it down again, but the tach "jumps" or looks like it's sticking. I need a new cable, but it works for now and it'll have to do. Got some other stuff that needs fixing to get it back to 100%.

IF everything u checked out is OK and all hooked up properly, then the speedo cable itself has snapped. To check this, take the cable out of the speedo gear in the tranny, and pull on the cable itself thats inside. If its snapped, then part of the cable should come out completely. I just fixed this exact problem on my friends hatch and his speedo cable was in 2 pieces.

Cluster may be defective...i believe the VSS for our cars is located in the cluster itself. On later cars it is not.
