I have a hunch.... (04 S2000)
.....that a lot of 00-03 BS S2K's will be going on sale soon. just read the C&D review of the 04 model. same hp, but 1000rpm sooner. more torque, and 1300rpm sooner. add to that a slicker shifting transmission, revised rear steer geometry, spring rates, swaybar's, bigger tires, and rear rc height change and i think honda just made the early cars obsolete.
don't remember any changes in weight though. doh! if the s2k follows the same path as every other car on the market, it likely got heavier. i still want one now more then ever.

This has been covered extensively on the S2000 boards, and the jury is still out.
I heard that GRM (Dave Wallens?) got his hands on one and thinks that it will beat up on the old one.
The 17" tires may or may not hurt depending on the race tires that are available. The extra shifting is certainly a bit of a concern.

I talked to David this past weekend. I don't see any advantage of the older cars, other than cheaper tires, and not having to goto 3rd. If I wanted to play in BS, I'd be getting an '04.

I'm not so sure. A lot of things are improved... yes. BUT it has a softer rear sway bar (more consumer friendly... but not necessarily better for autox) and the issue of shifting to third a LOT. It'll be somewhat course dependent as to which one is faster... especially since going back to first will be harder in the '04 (hopefully it won't need it as much)
And I think the 17" wheels are between Hoosier sizes... (don't quote me on that) so that might be a problem as well.
Although, I'm sure the ProSolo S2000's are VERY happy.

Maybe going to 3rd with the 04 spec car may not be so bad if they don't need to go back to first on every tight turn.
That was what always bothered me about the BS S2000's--they way they were forced to hit 1st gear all of the time.
Or hey, make the 04 S2000 an AS car and leave the old ones in BS. Not like there is much difference between the classes anyhow...

only if you do EVERYTHING between models....ie, you'd have to change the motor, full interior, exterior, suspension, wheels, gearbox...etc.
And then you'd have paid ~25,000 bucks plus the price of the '04 car for a car that you'll never be able to sell and will be an '02 model with '04 VINS...

Update/backdate came from the Street Prepared rules, not Stock. Even then, it only applies to cars on the same line in the rulebook and if someone can explain the logic of which cars go on the same line and which don't I would be very impressed.
On topic, I'll be very interested in seeing results from early events next year. There could be a flood of "old" S2000's for sale like RX7's when the Z06 stomped into town. Has anyone seen any hard performance numbers yet, I only remember seeing driving impressions so far? How about actual speed in gears for 1st to 3rd? Are the new Hoosiers or Kuhmos going to be available in sizes they can use by spring? All questions are only academic since they have too many zeros in the price for me to have any personal concern about this.

You can change the trim level of a car in stock class, of the same model year if you change everything. You cannot change anything between years, unless you are updating to an option package or trim level that was available in both years.
Whew... now I'm confused. :D
As to the performance of the new S2K, Ron Bauer (last year's DS champ) drove their new one on street tires and feels that it's an AS car. I'm still not convinced. I think the gearing will hurt it, and it's going to take a little while to get the new suspension sorted out. We should be able to hold our own this season, but beyond this year if some hotshoes get '04s and sort them out, it might be over for our cars.
Oh well, then we can put a cage in her!

best info I've seen on it yet....though I haven't looked much.

Using the gearing on the above site comes out to 58 mph in second with stock tires. What is the nearest race size to 245/40/17 that will fit a 8.5" wide wheel? Is it taller or shorter?
245/40/17
[/QUOTE]At the quoted 24.5" height, that works out to 57 1/2 mph for second gear. I suppose now we need to know where the rev limiter hits. That's really suprising given the tendency to make a second that can break 60mph or even 100kph to make acceleration figures look good in the magazines. Of course Miata's have short gears and seem to go OK, so what do I know.
