you're right, it is a pain in the butt. you have to reach from under and reach towards the front side of the airbag (closer to the firewall). you'll feel tabs that keep it in. you have to pry those free. and pull from the top side.
you'll have to squeeze your hand past the airbag and reach in there.

there's no other way to get it out other than prying it out. the little tabs all around the sides keep the airbag in even after the screws are out. are you prying it from the outside or inside? did you try getting a long flat screwdriver and popping the tabs from the inside?
i did pry it... i did it from the top of the dash... and now my dash is all messed up... i got it to come up about half an inch and then it wont move anymore... it seems like that its stuck on something really good...
how many nuts are holding it??? i got teh bottom three under the glove comparment... is there more?

are you prying it out evenly, or are you trying to get one little part out all the way? try to get it out like half an inch all around, pry a little out and have a friend hold it while you get another section out.

I just pulled mine out i pryed from the top with my FINGERS so i didn't mess up the dash it is a BITCH TO DO but it is better than messing up the dash. The clips are on there very very very tight so just pull till you get one side popped out then work your way around i hope that helps took me like 20 minutes (my interior is already torn apart)
yeah i pried from one corner first then the middle and then it wont come up anymore... i can get teh left corner easy but once i get that corner up it wont move anymore... im kinda scared to do it hard cause its really close to the window and i dont wanna crack that i just replaced it... ill try again later tonight...

actually, both 96-98 and 99-00 come with both light and dark gray.

The tool: lug wrench/ pickle fork might work too
just kinda slide it under the airbag a little bit and pry down
once it breaks free it slides right out
I for one HATE air bags i am scarred to death of them, i had one deploy and break my nose and i bit my toughe and put 2 teeth marks in the tounge and it took it like 2 weeks to head, bit all the way through it with the 2 from teeth so i hate them i don't think they are safe and i always wear my seatbelt. Also i am putting a cage and 5 points in my car you can't tell me shitty air bags are safer than that.

SRS "scondary restrant system" and Air bags save lives!!!
I usally see problems with air bags when, poeple are doing something to them that they should be doing.
with that being said....
full cage and a 5 point harness, is better than just seatbelts, and airbags.

Compared to what could've easilly happened if it didn't deploy, I'd say you got off fine. Taking out airbags is a bad idea, period. 5-point harnesses are uncomfortable as hell and the combination of that and a cage isn't for street use.
Whatever, though. It's your car and it's your life. Stop hitting things and it shouldn't be a problem
