OT- if you could go to any race in the US next year
My dad is trying to plan a trip for us. I suggested that we go to a race somewhere, and now am in charge of research. So if you could go to any race in the US what one would it be? I'm thinking that we'll get paddock passes and such, and then I can report back here... I was thinking 24 hours of Daytona... but dunno...

Try it without earplugs...
...Or so people tell me. I've never been to an F1 race due to the timing of when I give finals and all.
But I'm trying to find a way, trust me.

Well, if it doesn't have to be in the US, I would strongly recommend the 24 hours of Le Mans. I went in 98 and it can be done quite economically: plane to Paris (like 500$ pp), 50 minute train ride (?$) camping pass (45$ for the spot) and general admission tickets (45$ pp), spend a couple of days in Paris too if you like.
Also, if you're driving to an event, I think the Canadian GP is probably a cooler event to go to than the USGP. There's a ton of atmosphere here, the track is beautiful and the city really gets behind the event. I live here and it's my favourite week of the summer. I've gone to the race 7 times.

I was kinda unimpressed when I went, but maybe that's just me. Couldn't really look at the cars or anything and the racing was just okay.

How about the Honda Challenge "Nationals" (in case that happens next year)? If not, how about the Grassroots Motorsports $2004 Challenge?

...make it a Honda-Challenge race!

Petit LeMans.
But then again, I'm biased ... I'm only 30 minutes from it. I'm all about a trip to 24 Hours of LeMans though. Wasn't aware it was that inexpensive.

Canadian GP, Daytona 24 in a morothome (Thurs thru Sun w/paddock club), some Vintage Endurance race @ Watkins Glen or some other notable historic track.
The USGP is cool to see at least once if you're an F1 fan. If for no other reason, just to hear a Ferrari at 19,000 RPM!
For a good balance of cool cars, access to drivers and great support races (WC), you can't beat ALMS. Sebring and Petit LeMans are two great races to see but both have very different personalities. It depends on what type of crowd you prefer to hang out with.
Daytona this year was a little lame. I was working with Brumos (#58 car) and we dropped out early. Initially, I thought I'd just hang out and watch the race. After a couple of hours I ended up booking an earlier flight home... I saw the finish on TV. With an expanded DP field for next year, it might be more exciting.

Thanks for the responses- I have to say there were a lot of races that I just plum forgot about going to. I'm really hoping to get to one where I can get down into the paddock and get to see some engineering- I agree that teh USGP is probably not the place to do that.
