Default CarSound cat VS. test-pipe...

been thinking about getting a JDM header with 2.5" outlet so i need to think about getting either a new cat or a test-pipe.

i'm just not 100% sure which one to get.
i live in florida, so i never have emissions. i know the cat would be more expensive, and i'm more inclined to get the test pipe b/c it would be one less thing to eventually breakdown. also, i guess it'll open a lil more power.

i'm sure i'll get plently of "save the environment" replys....so please keep it to yourself.

opinions?

(btw, with a test-pipe does the check engine light click on...what's up with the whole O2 sensor thing?)

thanks!!

yes.. it will throw a CEL, but won't put you in limp mode or anything.. there are ways to trick the ECU's OBDII sensor. Or just buy an OBDI ECU..

or just buy an O2 simulator.

and if you do decide to get a test pipe, consider getting a resonated one. remember, without a cat, be prepared to clean the rear bumper and passenger side of the wing a lot if you own a phairy yellow or CW ITR. that's if you care about how your car looks.

i personally dislike test pipes because of the added noise and environmental reasons.

Im using a Kenji OBD1 ECU with my testpipe. Although it does reek from time to time, its not loud at all.

Everyone....how many times a month do I have to post this????

-You don't need a new ecu

-You don't need on o2 simulator

Get the testpipe without a bung for the o2 sensor. Remove the 02 sensor from the stock cat and wrap it in foil, then zip tie it to the shifter stabilizer, the other bar next to the shift linkage that does not move when you shift.

There will be no CEL and you solved your problems without having to buy extra ****.

I hate to say it, but everyone that posted before gave out the wrong information. The OBD 1 ecu will alleviate the problem but why pay an extra 200 + dollars? Why buy an 02 simulator that doesn't work? I have been running this for over a year with no problems whatsoever.

Personal Experiences with testpipes:

1) Does NOT make the car louder when driving normally. VTEC is louder. THe car will sound different when driving around, but not louder.

2) It will stink like **** when you are sitting at a light. Keep you windows closed and hope that a cop behind you doesn't smell it.

This is correct as well.. but there are other benefits of OBDI ECU's like the JDM ITR, Kenji's, Mugen, etc..
