Default Dyno, what gear to use

To you dyno pros.
How do you know what gear to use to dyno the car?
Does it matter if you use 3rd or 4th?

It does matter what gear is used on the dyno. The object is to use a gear ratio that is as close to 1:1 as possible.

And since most of the time 4th gear is the closest gear to having a 1:1 ratio. This simply means that for every one time the engine spins, the wheels will spin once.

Doesn't matter what gear, the difference measured between gears on the dyno is negligible. Your dyno operator will probably tell you what gear to use anyway.

No it doesn't. Think about it for a minute. Hint: final drive ratio.

I did mine in 4th.
Not many mods, but that's what they told me to use it in.
1st gen b16, spoon vtec cont.,hks intake, custom 2.5" exh. stock cat., timing set at 17 deg.
one timer of 159hp @ wheels.
Yah I'm braggin'

NOTE: They also asked for the weight of the car + driver. Don't memeber what I said 2300? or 2200?

I always use 4th gear as it seems to give more accurate (read: actual) readings. 3rd gear pulls alway result in a higher HP number.

also besides having the the engine and tranny in a 1:1 ratio
the tech needs also to set the dyno into reading a specific ratio... on my dynos the RPM=3.07
