my friend has a LS tranny with no grinds, and wants to trade me his LS tranny for my GSR, which grinds 3rd...on top of that, he'll give me some cash...

my setup for now will be a stock LS turbo in a 92 hatch...should I make the trade? will I be loosing out with the LS tranny?

Put some GM syncromesh tranny fluid in your tranny. Run it for few hundred miles. Pretty much stopped my grinding in 3rd.

I would keep the GS-R trans. Put a new 3rd synchro in it and call it a day. The LS trans is a dog.

I wouldnt trade it away. Cable GSR trannies are rare as ****!! They are almost gold. Tear it apart and rebuild it.

That is just my opinion. The synchro is around $150 and who needs to pay labor. Do it yourself. I just did mine. Took me about an hour after the tranny was opened up. I would much rather do this than be permanately stuck with the LS gearing.

Id rather pay $200 and rebuild a tranny then pay $800 for a used tranny and hope it works. At least with the $200+labor you know your going to get a working tranny back with good syncros.

Also, $200 is cheap! Back when my car was new (i have a 93 SI so we are talking years ago) i bought it new with a 10 year/100,000 mile warrenty. At 98,000 miles it was grinding 2nd really bad and started to grind in 3rd. I took it back to the honda dealer and they rebuilt the tranny for me...free. I figured i might as well replace the clutch at the same time (it was orginal) and the total was like $2400 . I only paid for the clutch which was something like $200.

So go for the $200 rebuild! Keep your GSR tranny, LS trannys are dogs.

Yea, rebuilding is the best idea if you only have to replace like 1 gear, but most places will charge you $150 just to open the tranny. So unless you can do it your self it can get expensive fast.
