befor you start doing anything i would do a little more research, i would go with a gsr head and an itr pistons, its going to be some ok compressioin if you go with a b16 head and some ctr pistons its going to be over 12:1 comp, some ppl say you cant daily drive but some say its possible and if your not going to tune it dont even think about it....with itr pistons it brings the compression down alot so its alot safer.its really how much power you want and how much you want to spend....but do it right and dont take any shortcuts
yeah, I highly rec you do a a good deal of research before you commit yourself to a LS/VTEC project. If you want a good basic writeup that's informative, and offers budgeting, http://www.importreview.com had a good writeup, that I used. Most of the parts can be had for cheaper of course, but it's a good place to start with if you're too lazy to search here, and want to know the basics of what's involved.
The thing can be pretty damn costly, and I get the impression that an LSVTEC/CRVTEC can be pretty unreliable if not built w/ good parts and a good builder. You should really plan things out and anticipate the costs in the respective parts before making any commitments, even if it's buying a block that seems like a good deal.
Technical advice aside (which I'm not very qualified to give), just be sure to hang around the classifields section (and maybe even groupbuycenter ) alot to look for good deals, b/c you'll end up needing a lot of parts, and every dollar you can save adds up. Also, the more time you're willing to wait, the more of a chance you'll save more, as the part you'll want most likely will show up sooner or later as a good deal.

Don't waste your money on a GSR or ITR head when you have a perfectly good PR3 head to build. LS block is a good start.
