ok so im getting an intake....i was lookin around and an aem cold air intake goes for around 150-160...on ebay i see generic cold air intakes goin for around 20-50 depending on various models.

so my question is...whats the difference between the generic and brand name intakes? is the aem, or any other brand for that matter, worth the extra money? theyre both jus piping lol.

o and i also heard iceman is better on del sols?

 

realisticly they are the same.. the difference is the coating on the pipes and the air filter quality. If both the tubes are the same size they will give you simuliar gains. If you want to save money get the cheap one and switch the filter it comes with to a K&N youl be happy and so will your wallet.

 

its all the same pretty much... think about it, piping with a filter. get a CAI tho, dont waste time with a short ram or a front mount stlye one.

but its all just your personal preference i guess...

 

As long as you put a good filter on a cheap one, it should perform very similarly to an expensive one.

If you get a CAI get the valve the prevents water from getting into the engine from the intake.. I had an engine hydrolock one rainy night....

buy the cheap cai and go to autozone and get a k&n cone filter for it

 

im not arguing that AEM is WAYYYYY better than generic intakes ,...but didnt you test a short ram vs. an AEM cold air?

I've had the AEM for 5+ years now, never removed it for rain. I did make sure to follow AEM's directions and NOT remove the inner fender liners. Even tonight, it was raining so bad I had to slow to 40 mph on the freeway, I never worried about hydrolock. Mine you, it was hydroplaning at 40 mph, it was raining that HARD!!!!!!

IMHO if you drive with your head up you **** or never pay attention to road conditions (standing water) then I guess a AEM CAI or it's copies are not for you.

I've known 4 people locally to hydrolock their engines. First was Deano V. who I bought my AEM through. He was running his CRX without the fender liner. Second person tried to go through deep water. How deep? The interior flooded as the engine hydrolocked. Number 3 didn't have fender liners either. Number 4 was running some wild front end that was basically open all the way across the front, Alien INVADER????

Common sense is your best friend. If you don't have it, goto college and try to find it!

 

i avoided driving my car during the day as my passenger side fenderwell got all chewed up until i got a new one, it was a sudden storm and it rained for hours and i tried to wait it out but eventually i had to head home.......got about half way

 

so the rush to get home cost you a motor.

Lesson learned.

If you leave all the plastic under your car you wont have a problem with a CAI. If you are going to get a bypass valve you may as well just get a short ram. It also seems (if my memory serves me) that the short ram produced more torque while the CAI produced more HP. Nothing really noticeable but food for thought.
