Is it safe to steam clean the engine?
You'll be ok just cover your distributor and battery. Then just spray away! Use caution thats all!
I did that my first weekend with my car with some degreaser crap i bought @ auto zone! Went crazy with the hose no probs here

Steam cleaning a engine bay is a bad idea because steam is extremely hot and can damage wire harnesses and other delicate parts
I suggest to use a normal high pressure spray with some engine degreaser and just cover up the distributor + alternator

Actually, there is a shop in my area that steam cleans engine bays. Don't know how much, but you should look around, someone might do it.

man I would have to say no ... I know it takes forever and its a pain but get a hand bucket make some soapy water and use a paint brush and go over only what you wont hurt or damage with the water then you wont have to worry about getting water into something you dont want to ... plus you can sit back and take some pride that you broke a sweat and actually worked on your car...
Use simple green first and then some Gunk engine degreaser for the tough spots. let it sit for a bit then hose off
once its hosed down good...just spray a good dose of tire foam all over the place and let it do its thing
then just wipe down and your chit is clean as hell

. by hand is the best with light soap , quick detailer and water, otherwise water will end up where it shouldnt be.wd 40 is a going to attract more dirt because it is greasy same with the armoral or the tire juice trick ..just make sure to wipe off any excessive grease and that should help.

What kind of steam cleaner did your mom buy? Is it one from an infomercial? If so, I have to agree w/ ITR GURU

not only did it leak, but the steam didn't last for too long... probably 5 minutes of steam time total. Even then, all it did was push dirty water around. Steam buggy =
