help with deltacam 272 on d15b7
ok I have the cam in, did my lash settings
cam/crank timing looks ok, idle screw is out as far as it will go(without coming off)
but the idle is really horrid,
well not always, it'll idle ok sometimes, but often it just puts out when I come to a stop. If I just leave it running, and dont touch it, it'll idle fine(well a bit low, maybe around 600-700) but it wont die out.
But when i'm driving around town, especially with lights and such on,
it will try to stall at stops in neutral.
Also the exhaust smells funny,
i'm new to all this but I "think" its running rich? not sure, cant see any smoke.
NOW ignition timing..
I've tried setting it as best I can, but the thing is the marks do not stay in place,
they will waver without me touching the distributor.
right now I have the dist set FULLY advanced! and timing looks to be about 16/18btdc(it fluctuates)
do you guys have any clue what I could do to fix this?
also, some notes on whats been done up to this point.
My first attempt to install the cam, I accidentally flipped the dist around 180(its not suposed to go in like that but it did) so the car wouldnt start.
when I finally figured it out, I forgot to mark it, so my timing got all out of wack,
I went back to stock cam for a minute, then back to the 272.
while timing was out of wack, my plugs would get coated black, but now that I have it set better they seem to be ok(i cleaned em off and they stay clean).
thats all I can think of at the moment,
hopefully you guys can be of better help than the eg forum...
THANKS

see thisis why u do not put a cam in a car without a fuel controller. you will run it irvch at idle and be issed off.
turn your timing back becasue its supposed to be a STEADY 750 rpm that you set it at, and ims ure you are well below that. take that cam out, and dnt put it in until you have some kinda of tuning device to lean it out at idle

hey, small world...
I have that exact same regrind on my F22A1...
I don't know the specifics of D's but if it makes you feel better mine idles like crap also...it idles rough and fluctuates from around 650-700ish but it hasn't stalled out on me yet...
What kind of other mods do you have on this engine...??? i would think that anything less than the basic 3 (I/H/E) with this cam would be a daily drivers' nightmare...
An adj cam gear won't help the idle... it will help you pick up a slight bit of the tq you lost with that aggressive of a cam if you advance it... probably won't help the idle though..

ok, cool thanks.
i've got the stock airbox with a kn filter dropin,
and the resonator removed(so it sucks in air from the wheel well). but thats it!
I think i'm gonna pick up one of those CAI off of ebay, and return the kn dropin.
and going to get an exhaust sytem also(2.5)
dont think i'm going to get headers though, unless someones selling some for SUPER cheap.
how would not having all the boltons effect the engine? would that be hurting my idle? Or is it just a power thing.
thanks!

Well, I had the full slew of bolt ons among other things when I bolted the cam in...but I have heard from 3rdGen Accord guys running the same cam, that they had similar problems on mild engines & the addition of the header after I/E really helped out with the issues they were having...

thats a bold move to go from almost nothing as far as bolt on's go to a new cam. deffidently aquire some basic boltons ( I, H, E) and mabey even a new computer setup before going cam crazy, but Im not going to say you did a bad thing, but your defedently not gonna relize the full potential of the cam untill you do so. thats comming from expirence of working on friends cars. Hope that helps, and good luck with your motor, I run the same one myself.

thanks man,
the cam was my first real engine modification actually, haha.
but yeah, I'm probably going to run an SMC + for engine management, at least to lean out my idle a bit, then if I can tune it somehow i'll use it for that.
but yeah, gotta get i/h/e one of these days,
right now i'm trying to only do modifications(aside from the cam, I just really wanted to try that out) that I can reuse on a later setup(probably d16z6).
I do have intake though!! sortof, hehe,
kn dropin and removed resonator, also I stuck in some pipe from homedepot so it sucks air from the wheelwell

thats a great start, as far as the intake goes..
and if your worried about future setups, find a used header (there everywere) and have a good exhaust shop run you a 2-2.25 inch exhaust to a straight through muffler and youll be very pleased, if you dont want a loud exhaust, have'em put an extra resonator on it,
and best of all, youll probably be able to use most of the stuff, except mabey the header, on your next setup!
And I wanna know more about that cam, because thats gonna be my next upgrade.
talk at ya later

oh yea, about the idle, I think having the idle mixture screw out that much mignt be your problem , find someone that has expierence vet tuning, or just tuning honda engines, I bet thatll take care of it
btw, a 2.5 exhaust is way too big for a N/A 1.5

yeah I should really take it by benen industries.. they're really close to me and should know more than anyone else I I know.
about the cam,
I dont know TOO much about it, except that its a deltacam regrind,
designed for the d15b7, and its their more agressive grind, the 272, which is supposed to be a sort of street/strip cam, as opposed to their 260, which is supposed to be just a streetable cam.
I've heard good things about the 260, good power, not bad idle,
but I got this one for 50bux, and wanted to see the most change,
i'm fine with running into/fixing problems that come up with such a gnarly cam,
because alot of this is about learning.

try the free fpr mod (ie:pull the vac hose off the fpr) if you don't have an adj one and see if that helps the idle at all... have you reset the ecu since the cam install... I know it sounds lame but my idle evened out abit after doing it... both are worth a try... I'm curious to see what effects they have on the d15 vs. my f22...

are you sure that the cam is in correctly and that you dont have the timing belt off a tooth on the cam gear?
sounds like if your dizzy is advanced all the way, your off a tooth.

no i'm definetely not off a tooth,
when the crank is at tdc, so is the camgear.
i have tried it 1tooth in either direction tho, at counterclock 1 tooth it does idle better, but runs slow as ****.
and yep, def reset the ecu a few times.
I dont think you can advance the ignition timing every far on these cars,
someone mentioned that, and I have the dist all the way forward, and it only achieves about 20btdc(supposedly 18 is best for this cam, but 20 helps my idle).
was driving the car around all day yesterday, with an air/fuel gauge hooked up,
didnt stall on me once, although the idle drops really really low sometimes(down to 500). but as long as it doesnt stall i'm fine!!
and the a/f reads not that bad.. i mean its kinda rich at idle.. but not so much to cause it to still i wouldnt think.
I would like to know more about that hose off the FPR,
is there a post somewhere on doing this? i dont want to go pulling the wrong hose.. heh, and exactly would this do?
thanks!
