Default transmission HELP

hey guys...
i have a friend with a 94 eg auto. just yesterday they drove out of town with the car and this morning when they tried driving it, they could only get the car (still in gear 1) to go at max 28 mph at about 4000 rpm and it wont change gear. there's also no check engine light as well. so im puzzled, im thinking its the transmission. any help would do. thanks

Try driving in a different gear and see if it will continue to accelerate.

well i took it for a drive and it seems to be stuck in gear one, i tried changing it into d3, d2...still no luck. the car is actually a STOCK 2000 auto cx (he didnt know what it was). while i was driving it, i could smell transmission fluid, checked underneath the car to see if there were any leaks, but NO leaks either. from looking at the outside, everything looks stock and alright. any other thoughts?
